Lead dress with filament wires at the back of chassis

Post by erwin_ve »

In april this year I bought a pre assebled ceriatone ots(non-HRM).

I was fairly happy with the sound but I knew it could be better,
based on several clone soundclips I heared with the same specs.

I did several things(soldering other components, trying, reading this board) that made a big difference in sound, but after a (deleted :( ) lead dress topic of dogears it got me started:

In original dumbles the filament wires are floating from one tube socket to another.
Lead dress is done according to that method. In the ceriatone OTS the filament wires are at the back of the chassis.
I didnt want to solder the filament wires again, because it's a pain in the ***, to get them back in those narrow holes.
So I decided to experiment with the wires coming from the pre amp tubes. Especcially the wire coming from pin 3(cathode).

In original Ots from factory this wire is follwing the dumble layout, but also sitting on the filament wire.
When putting the cathode(pin 3) wire floating 1 cm (1/2 ")above the filament wire, on both V1 and v2, there is a massive
change in sound. The overdrive seems to be the most affected. It has a really thick tone now and less fragmented.

At first, I thought I auto-suggested it. So I put the cathode wires back, sitting on the filament wires. But there was again that fragmented lead tone.
It's just unbelievable that such a funny little thing is making such a big difference. Bandmates and even my wife noticed the difference.

Most of you guys already knew this; so you always stress on lead dress
Maybe this is the way to go with filament wires at the back of the chassis.
Please let me know what you think!

And being your amp a non-hrm put those heaters wire's away from the snubbers on v2...

The heater wires are as close to the snubbers as in a floating method!

Every little thing matter.

I'll bet that not only does the proximity to the filaments matter, but there's something else near the cathode wire making a difference too.

True, maybe thats why HAD made a large turn with the cathode wire; well at least thats what got me thinking

Yes, I tried the large turn vs the short run. It's my belief that the proximity to the plate lead that makes the difference. It really does make a difference especally in the OD.

On my D'Lite out of necessity I ran my heater wires the Marshall way, that is, on the chassis floor near the back of the chassis.
Seemed to work fine.

The reason I did this is because I installed the Ironsounds loop and it would have been right where the heater wires were if I ran them above the tubes.

Don't let that smoke out!

very interesting, I was thinking the same looking at mine...
Have you got a photo of it?
