I'm glad you found the problem. FWIW, I'll offer what I did recently to chase down some hum in an amp I rebuilt for a guy. With a clip lead to ground, I started grounding signal points, beginning with the input jack. Judge by ear how much the hum does/doesn't change. This can help figure out exactly where in the signal chain the hum is entering (assuming it's not heater or PS noise).
In my case, I had to put in two 1.5" long pieces of shielded wire as the connections between bass and treble pots. That took the noise floor to the basement!
