I put this together a while back with the goal of being really cheap. Originally it was supposed to be a mini lightning but it sounded horrible so I converted it to a 2 hole pool. Still a work in progress.
I have some gut shots somewhere but can't seem to find them at the moment. The picy shows the amp where it was set when I recorded it straight into my laptop. The last knob is a MV and not a presence/ cut. It doesn't work and will go back to either a presence or cut.
Speakers are warehouse green berets, The cab is open.
I'm curious about what sounded so terrible in the Lightning incarnation since the Lightning is sooooooooooo close (wrt the preamp) to a Rocket and Vox AC30 TopBoost.
Good question. I have pondered that having built a rocket.
It seemed generally to be overly bright. Very weak and fizzy when it was cranked. No meat to it so to speak. A mate of mine played through it for a while and pretty much agreed with me. Someone else listened to it and thought it was great clean but his face said it all when it was turned up. Just didn't have it.
After playing around with it for a while I decided to revamp it to a 'pool based preamp since I had already tried my hand at one of those. Just couldn't get a happy compromise with it.
If I found myself in the same situation now, I hope I might be able to figure it out a little better.
