ODS Combo Cabinet

Here it is, my take on an ODS combo cabinet.

I used the few styling cues I have available to make it a appear a little more butch and beefy than the original. It might look more steam punk had I used the excess of fasteners seen on originals. One of several deviations from original are the minimum of fasteners on the back panel. Anyone can drill extra holes and use more if they choose. We all build custom amps here. I expect most of us will be removing the back panel frequently to change tubes, swap speakers and tweak our circuits.

This is actually the Mark II version. The first one is gigging somewhere in the Boston area. The guy who has it provided notes about what he wanted, I made changes to give him what he wanted and I made a few changes I wanted to do. He raves about the tone. Not to blow my horn but I might as well... I hear that a lot lately. It's not like this is the second combo I've built, I've built lots of cabinets of every size and shape. The stars aligned and I've built Dumble cabinets lately.

It's a clear pine shell with cherry used as a secondary wood. Cherry or mahogany have a superior strength to weight ratio so they work great for baffle supports. The baffle and the back panel are birch ply.

I haven't weighed this one. In general they weigh around 20 pounds. This one felt a little heavier (24 pounds empty?) once I bolted up the baffle and the back panel. It's a feather without them. One of my design criteria at the top of my list (next consideration down from great tone) is light weight.

Just a suggestion (maybe a bad one) but you might try building the 2x12 cabinet like Robben Ford uses...I would think there would be a market for it and I don't see many others just like it. Yes, plenty of folks build 2x12s that are similar but they're not quite the same. For example, many 2x12s are not quite tall enough (when setup horizontally) and a Dumble ODS sized head sticks out on each side when setup vertically like Robben does. This cab is a perfect fit for an ODS head.

You should be able to get ballpark dims from these pics (if you know the dims of typ real ODS head). And there's prob at least a member or two that know exact dims.

Just an observation.
If the speaker is loaded from the back, what keeps the t-nuts from pulling loose from the baffle?

Reasonable care when mounting the speakers perhaps?

I've built a couple hundred speaker cabs and combos. All use "T" nuts. No problems reported with the "T" nuts.

Worst case scenario... someone pops a "T" nut out or strips its threads. With stripped threads the nut can be carefully driven out with a punch. The new one can either be pulled back in with the fastener or pressed in with a "C" clamp. I press them in when I use them to mount handles on very shallow head cabinets. Some cabinets are too small to swing a hammer inside.

I have another one in progress. The black one has several deliberate deviations from original spec. The next one is closer to stock in appearance. I'm debating whether it should be blonde or green levant as per R.F.'s combo.

The "correct" handle wasn't difficult to track down. When I add chrome corners and the handle to the next one I'll have a pretty fair replica.

Next question and this one opens a can of worms... would black hardware look better with the dark green levant or black tolex? It's a can of worms because black screws are an easy substitution although black screws almost demand black handle ends and black corners. The "correct" handle only comes with chrome ends.

I built this one just for fun using cutoffs and adjusting the scale "slightly".

Very nice looking cabs! As to the green levant in the works(my favorite tolex color) CHROME. Can o' worms is officially opened....

Wow beautiful clean corner work - what kind of cutter are you using (knife, roller cutter, exacto etc.) and are you cutiing in place? Also are you using solvent based, water base (varieties of contact cement) or rubber based (tolex glue). to affix and does it maintain the corner tightness after some time goes by?
