Mechanically quieter footswitch?

Post by Luthierwnc »

Hi guys;

Over the years I have used sturdy stompswitches for their reliability -- like carlings, fulltones, etc. I'd like to know if anyone has a recommendation for a long-life switch that doesn't make so much mechanical noise. It could also be a DIY project from available parts. I do like the TS style mini pedal but haven't ever reverse engineered one.

Thanks, Skip

Carling also makes momentaries that are rugged and quiet. You would need some minor flip-flop type logic to manage the relays.

The box the switch is mounted in contributes a great deal to the noise.A hollow metal box is very noisy.A wooden box with just enough routed for the switch and wires is actually very quiet.

I've had pretty good success with the Alpha DPDT. Mouser part#: 107-SF12020F-L

Also, the Carling "X-wing" is pretty quiet.

Of course, both these do generate audible "clicks" when actuated but considerably less than the more rugged Carling 316-PP or the blue 3PDT. Reliability wise, I've used both without failures yet (knock on wood!!!)

It is a minor issue but I've always disliked hearing the click before the lead. sh
