EV-ish 15" speaker needs recone...who?

Post by greiswig »

Hi,

I bought a used Boogie bass cabinet, where they'd used the psuedo-ElectroVoice 15" speaker in it. Man, I have never seen a voice coil so seized in the gap!

I can replace this with a good JBL that I have, but I'm wondering if it would be worth reconing this EV-like speaker? I have no idea whether this is EV without the badge, or just a cheap fake, or...

If it's worthwhile, who should do it? Weber wants $95 plus S/H, which actually seems pretty reasonable...

Other ideas?

Weber gets my vote. I love his speakers and I have heard nothing but praise about his reconing service.

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone know anything about this speaker? It says it is made in the USA, and it sure LOOKS a lot like an EV, but there's no EV badge anywhere. Is it worth reconing?

As I said, I have a JBL 2226H that I can put in there, but obviously the T/S parameters are going to be different from original design...

There are lots of OEM EV speakers around with no labels. Boogie often used EV too, so i'm sure thats what it is. I have a label-less 12L right now i've been using for 15 years or more.I love EV's !
As for reconing, just be sure whoever does it is very reputable and has a good warranty. I have a EV reconed once and they guy screwed it up and wouldn't warranty it, so i was out the cost of the recone and i just tossed the speaker.

There's also Orange County Speaker that's been re-coning for years.

If the speaker has a > Cast Aluminum < frame, it's worth re - coning.

It doesn't matter who made it...the important thing is 1) will it be done right ?,which goes along with 2) will it last ?

Finally, if it's an Alnico magnet, will it be re-magnetized?

Weber uses an incredibly powerful magnetizing machine...

If it has an Alnico magnet, after 10 or so years, > When & only if <you re-cone < it's a good idea to have the mag "Re-magged" to restore the efficiency of the speaker. Alnico magnets lose their strength over time.

Weber re - mags (as a part of re-coning) , Alnico's.

What is $100 anymore? A tank of gas, a concert ticket, etc...

Cast Aluminum Framed Speakers last Decades if ya take care of 'em.
I'm mainly interested in Class A Single Ended Amplifiers, although switchable NF would be OK.
