TL606 or TL806 for a 100W ODS?

Post by BobW »

Has anyone performed an actual A / B test using a 100W ODS? Which do you prefer?

Not the Thiele cabs, but I have an EVM15L in a Lopoline closed back. I've A/B/d it against a TL806 with a Eminence Alpha. The 15 actually has more highs than the Emi, and tons of bottom. With a 100Watt HRM it's huge and fat.

Overall I like the mids on the 12 better, but the some folks like the 15 better.

Bob-I, good info.

I am looking for more mids then what's coming from my bassman cab (similar to the THD). Although I have a JBL D140 collecting dust at the house, and the total investment of the 1x15 would be less, the 1x12" build seems like the logical choice for best tone.

thanks for all the inputs.

I'm no expecrt on cab design, but the TL's are designed for EV. The specs of JBL may be completely different.

Eminence sent us several 15's to try in our Fralin Model.. There were 2 that stood out.. first the Legend series.. Produced a nice round bottom.. with detailed mids.. The Legend at fairly low volumes has a nice chime on the top end... I credit the lighter paper they use vers. the EV which has a slightly thicker cone which to me produces a kind of papery (Highly Technical term) boxy like tone.. Especially at low volumes
The Legend is good for 50 watters... I do recommend a Weber beam blocker or better yet cut + cross section in the baffle when using any of these speakers You will be surprised how the cross built into the baffle really does help with the beamy mids...
The 2nd and my fave is Patriot/ Commonwealth 15 without the metal cone.. 200 watts I believe is the rating... good size magnet not boxy at all well voiced and would be the better choice for the 100 watter..
Gotta pound on it to get to break.. For weight and tone Lindy picked the Legend 15.. Nice speakers for the Money..
