Anyone interested in chassis?

Post by markmalin »

Hi guys,

Hey, I had a guy draw up a chassis for me and sent prints off to a local fabricator. I was surprised at the price reduction when you buy 4 or 5 vs only one! One chassis is on the order of $135, while at 5 chassis' the price drops to around $50. I was curious to know if anyone might be interested in going in on a few of these with me to bring my prices down?

Here's the rub, though, and please read this carefully. The layout is "similar" to a dumble, but it's NOT a standard dumble layout. It's my own layout so I've changed a few things. The size is 19" x 2.5" x 8". Here are some other things I did:
  • 1.) Moved the volume pot next to the other pots
2.) Did not use IEC type power cord, but put a hole for a Fender style strain relief.
3.) I stretched the chassis to 19" wide.
4.) spaced the pots out to use chicken heads w/out interference.
5.) I added an additional tube socket for future reverb option, and added another pot hole in the front panel to the right of the Presence (which I plan to cover with a face plate until I start doing reverb)
6.) I moved the power switches to the back
7.) I'm using a larger, Fender style pilot light
8.) I didn't punch all the holes for boards and stuff in the bottom, just the tube sockets, bias pot and a transformer hole for the PT
6.) The PT hole is specific to a certain Heyboer found on Allenamps.com. It's the TP40D (smaller hole than the typical Twin/Bandmaster)
Maybe nobody's interested in something this design, but I figured it was worth asking. If I could get 4 other people interested, they'd be around 50 + shipping each.

In any case, if this is something you might be interested in email me directly and I can send you a picture of what the chassis layout looks like. My email address until this Friday is "mark(dot)malin(at)ge(dot)com". After Friday you can use my home address of "mjmalin(at)uwalumni(dot)com" or just PM me.

Thanks guys.
Mark.

I may be interested if you consider shipping it my way.
I'd like to see the drawing too. Are the corners welded or folded?

Hi,

Sure, I would consider shipping to europe. I'd have to figure out how to ship, but if you are willing to pay the shipping that would be fine with me. As for mounting, there are 4 PEM nuts in the flange at the top of the chassis. The corners are not welded, but folded. Send me an email and I can send you a picture of the layout.

Cheers,
Mark.

What can I say, Fabio... too many late hours playing the guitar and not enough time studying in school ;)

So far I have 3 including you, if you're in, which would put the price at about $65 + shipping. I have a couple other people who have expressed interest, but nobody else has said a definite "yes". If I could get one more, the price would drop to around $55. 2 more and it's down around $50.

Just so you guys know, I'm not making any money on this. These are the actual prices quoted from the fabricator, so you'd pay me what I have to pay him plus your shipping costs.

Also, I was talking with psychonoodler and he made some great suggestions. For those of you who have seen the chassis drawing, I'm talking wtih my designer to put these into place. They are as follows: (if you haven't seen the drawing, ignore this)

- Move the power tubes away from the transformer (closer to the 9-pin sockets), which allows me to move the standby switch closer to the power switch :)
- Move the bias pot to the back of the chassis
- Spread out the bias test points so they're not stacked
- Swap the fuse and power cord locations, so the cord will come out the bottom of the amp and the fuse holder will be on the back. This will make it easier to make a "face plate" for the back of the chassis!
