Trainwreck Cab - Roundover?

Post by Lonely Raven »

I'm reading, and getting mixed information on what the round-over is on the Trainwreck cabs.

Can someone give me a definitive answer as to what the radius is for the round over? I need to buy a router bit for my new router, and I'd hate to blow money on the wrong bit!

Thanks in advance!

I did a cab a while ago and used one with a 1/4" radius. It looked pretty good, but that said I have no idea what was used on the real thing.

A few months back Guitar Player had pics of Brad Paisley's Trainwreck. I was surprised to see that the round overs were separate trim pieces. You might check it out.

Don't know the radius but definitely get a bit with a bearing. The cheap solid type leave nasty burns.

BTW it's likely there are different roundovers for different edges. My guess would be 1/4" for the inside edges and 1/2" for all others

Perhaps Glen will weigh in on this. His cabs had to match an existing 'wreck.

That's kinda what I'm hoping for.

I've heard everything from 1/4" to 1/2" round overs. I think our drawing in the TW files section says 3/8", but then again, half the people I talk to say that drawing is wrong as well.

Great pic MB. How'd you get so close?

So, still no solid word on what the round-over is supposed to be?

Can anyone tell me how to determine this without a router bit in hand? I'll then check my original cab. My cab builder did match my cab in every respect for my pair of personal clones, and yes the PDF file I found on the net was quite different than my original on many points.

Pretty sure this doesn't help: but there are radius gauges, both english and metric. A decent machine shop should have a set. Alternately, a large hole punch can be used to create gauges.

My eyeballs say 1/4", which I don't particularly like. Fender is 1/2" and the TW's are clearly less.

You could scrape off your high school geometry. Take two straight edges, measure the distance between the cab and the corner of the straight edges. a squared plus b squared = c squared time yields the truth.

Before I was a computer tech, I was a wood worker...we would use this very technical method....

We'd take a box of bits, and set each one on the curve till it fit and no light could be seen between the bit and the wood.

I know, I know...years of training and should only be performed by a professional making $25 an hour...

The other method we would use, was give the builder a call.

Glen,

Any details you can straighten out so maybe we (or I) could draw up a more TW accurate plan?
