Speaker Taster

Post by martins3325 »

I saw a post about speakers and rather than bury this in that thread I figured it is deserving of its own thread. I found this a long time ago on TGP ..several Different speakers through different heads and guitars...recorded at same mix and levels. Maybe not dead on scientific but best chance you'll probably ever have to hear different speakers playing the same riffs with same amp. It was posted from Southbay Ampworks..who distributes Scumbacks..which are made for him to his specs by Weber I believe...and are very good. Also some different model Celestion pre-rolas, Newer Celestion Heritage, Eminance Private Jacks, Alien speakers. Its funny from set up to set up I have different thoughts..one thing I came away with was I like the Pre-Rola 20W, and I thought the emi PJs sounds closest to the pre-rolas on some tracks..not bad for a budget speaker! And oddly enough the Newer High Dollar Heritages sound least like the pre-rolas on some tracks. Anyway..good illustration on how different speakers can sound..and im sure opinions on what sounds best will be all over the board..beauty is in the ear of the beholder. Might be a huge help when deciding what speakers to put your hard earned $$ into.

Wish he would have added Celestion Blue and Golds to this..and maybe Red Fangs..but it is still cool.

I tried to format so you can just click the link but you may need to cut the 1st part which ends in ***.mp3 and paste into your browser

Enjoy!

Good deal! Thanks for the links.

I listened to each of those, a number of times, when he first posted them on TGP. If you track it back, they were originally posted with NO identifiers except track x, y, z. A public, blind taste test.

BTW, he's changed his product codes (and added some) since then.

He's now parked at http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/

My fave are the H75s.

Yeah ..the blind thing was a good idea..but I can listen impartially and not be influenced by the brand. Which is why I was suprised to say I liked the PJs alot..strike me as a similar frequency response to the Pre-Rola 20s..though on some clips they sound a tad muffled. I just copied his links and did a little formatting...my 2-12 has the SA-75M's..and my vintage basketweave 4x12 has two 75Ms and two Celestion GH-12-30s --which im not crazy about-- after relistening to those clips I might try picking up a couple Private Jacks and using two of those with the two 75M's. I really like the Pre-Rola 20s best but I'm not dropping $1600 on speakers..and hope they arent messed up or blow!

By the way Gearhead Im sending you a email about a different topic.

I'm in the R&D stage of a pre rola 20 watt model Scumback version right now. Due to it's needing a paper voice coil to be authentic sounding, and not a higher temperature version (nomex, etc), it's going to be tricky to get the tone right. The doping is different on a 20 watt pre rola vs the later 25 watt models, and I'm going to use a 30 watt voice coil instead of a 20 watt just so that it won't get too hot too quickly.

I'm expecting the first prototypes in about 2-3 weeks.

You say the doping's different on the 20's. Where it's applied to the cone or the chemical make-up? I have a 4 x 12" slant that may need a quartet of these 20's with a paper 30W voice coil.

It will be ideal if these puppies have aquired a bit more of the Pre-Rola charm. 8)
I'll be more than a little intrigued with the results of the prototipo's
initial tests.

Always, all the niceness,

Noel.

Southbay,

Are the 20 watters going to be Alnico or Ceramic? Both? The best sounding Marshall cab I ever played had 4 of the 20 w alnicos. I used an original JTM 45 head.

Noel, billyz...the new models are going to be ceramic. As for alnicos, I already offer a new version that sounds like the old Silver models. There at my new site, www.scumbackspeakers.com
