Other than changing the bias is there anything that needs to be done to get 6l6's to run in an express? Has anyone tried this? Is there more bottom end to it and a less bitey distortion?
Thanks.

Well, ideally your OT should have a primary impedance of closer to 4k...the 5k2 tap on Moose's trannies should work pretty well. Bias needs to change like you said. The screens should be fine, you can mess a little with the grid resistors if you want to. You can try something around 3k maybe, but it probably won't make too big of a difference.
I've tried 6L6s in one of my expresses and I think I like them better than EL34s

Less bite, but soooooooo smooth and fat...

Re: 6l6 express
try kt66's-kind of a cross between an el34 and a 6l6. I have a set in my x-press (with a 6sl7 preamp) really fat and smooth with just enough meaness. I changed nothing but the bias

thanks...so a lower tap like one for a d-style amp would be better for the iron? what is ideal for the kt66?

KT66s are great because 2 in PP are looking to see 5k, which means that either marshall or fender iron will be a pretty close match (and a toneslut will be pretty much dead on with the 5k2 tap).
Geez, I just start on a rocket build and now you've got me hankerin' for a KT66 express...
