effects loop in a rocket

Post by angelodp »

I am interested in an effects loop for my rocket build. On my Dlite we intro'd the loop at the PI and master volume. How and where is the best spot for an effects loop on the Rocket. I know this is somewhat heretical as the Rocket is meant to be a pure tone amp. Any suggestions would b appreciated.

PS here is my Dlite layout

You could put it in the same place, it's a commonly used insertion point.
I've got an FX loop in a Mesa amp, but most of my FX sound their best
inserted on the front end.
 The rack mount reverbs & delays do sound nice in the FX loop.

Effects loops work with an amp like a Dumble because we are putting the effects after the distortion. 99% of the time that's really all that we are trying to accomplish by adding an effects loop. But in a Rocket most of the OD is happening in the power tubes and PI...so if you put an effects loop in the normal 'pre-PI' spot then it doesn't really buy you anything. Your distortion is still happening after the loop (and thus after the effects). IMO, a Rocket is the wrong amp for an effects loop. Just put any effects in front of the amp. If you are cranking the amp and want to use time-based effects then you should look into a wet-dry rig or something because an effects loop won't get you there with this amp.

This is an intriguing question. Yes, some effect sound better in a loop, and, yes, lots of the distortion in an Express in in the power section.

What I would suggest, since the you won't really know how you like a loop in there till you really try it, but going full tilt with a tube-driven loop might yield mods you don't like-- is get the Ironsounds loop card from Brown Note and, since it's pretty much self-contained, you could connect it up without actually modding the amp (new holes, etc).

It's a great loop, and even if you don't like it in that amp, you might love it in another one.
