VVR2 Liverpool layout help...pretty please?

Post by Tubetwang »

wanting to install the VVR2 into me Liverpool. My Express is ok with 6V6 for now...

The instructions are over my paint-by-number-non-tech-newbeish-head and i do not want to bother Dana...

I've checked on some helpfull pics but need to be shure of what i'm doing...

Would there be any kind souls who could do a simple layout as to where wires go to?

That would be much appreciated...

Twang

This might be a good thread for everyone to add some input. I have a few questions that might dictate what the layout might look like.

Is this being installed in an existing Liverpool or is it part of a new build that hasn't been built yet?

Are you planning on trying to install Voltage control pot on the front panel?

The layout of the board, mosfet and pot aren't what I would call critical but there are some lead dress rules that need to be followed. I am probably the worst at drawing pretty layouts but would be more than happy to help all I can.

I do know that Hairyandy has retrofitted a VVR in his Liverpool. He mounted the board on top of the chassis along with the mosfet and ran the wires through holes to the B+ and pot. Maybe we can get him to post some pics of his installation.

It's an existing Liverpool that i've built with Ceriatone parts.

Yup...front panel...just like sst4270 did his.

I saw the 3 colored wires going to the Zener from the board...but it's the other wires i'm not shure about as to where they should go...  :

I want to VVR the whole amp not just the power tubes...i'm such a newbie...i'm not whorthy...i'm not worthy...but...but...i like it!!!

Thanks Dana... 8) 8)

Adding VVR

Post by sst4270 »

TT,

If you can post some gut shots of your amp I'm sure we could help with layout and lead dress issues.

with the liverpool you have only to connect 3 wires.. B+ in,B+ out and ground.
Ground goes to a ground connection,
after that you have to disconnect the out wires of the standby switch and connect:
B+in: comes directly from the standby switch
B+ out: goes directly to the big 25W resitor and I think you have to connect the 3rd wire of the OT together with the 25W resistor
in this way you keep the chain only adding in the half dana's vvr
don't forget to add the extra 2 caps and 2 resistors...
I forget to put them in my express when I re-mounted the vvr but next time I'll open her I'll solder them again... now I'm using the vvr between the half and max
Dana's vvr works perfectly!!!

In every case wait soldering till Dana will confirm everything

Hey Twang (in my best Caddyshack-era Rodney Dangerfield voice),

I put mine in the extra hole next to the Presence control. You'll have to take the pot off of the VVR board and run the wires to it to get it in there. I then mounted the VVR board on the chassis "floor" between the pre and power boards, right where you have all of that silver tape. You'll have to re-route all of that. Follow Castor's instructions and you'll be fine. And DON"T FORGET the mica insulator for the Mosfet!!!

My Liverpool is out with all of the SC gear but I'll see it next Tuesday. I have to open her up to do a couple things anyway so I'll try to remember to shoot a couple pics for you.

Hope this helps... You're definitely going to need to move some of those wires that are taped down to the chassis.

Tubetwang,

PLEASE remove that metal tape! :?

I do not want to think what will happen when that stuff gets loose in the chassis.....

Please use tie wraps instead. :!:

Have fun with the project

I will get to work on that Liverpool and post pictures for the record once i'm done.

That tape will be removed and i'll do my best to clean the mess...

Castor could you please tell me about the two resistors and two caps you are referring to...i'm such a useless geek with computers...i've opened Dana's instructions but cannot see the pictures...

Andy, i like your Blog!

Thanks.

I've been at it all day...and i got sound, and all kinds of weird noises.

The VVR2 volume cuts dead at half and the volume is lowered from dead to half on it.

Something is wrong...

I noticed also that the phase inverter gets a big rush when i flip the standby switch...

I followed Castor's instructions as best i could...did not do the two resistors and the two caps as i do not know about those...

Here's some pics for your viewing pleasure...

Crap!

I kinda wish someone else had chimed in on my post.

Tubetwang the wire scheme I posted is slightly wrong and it may be the source of your problem.

Will post a revised one in just a few minutes. Patience.

Updated Layout

Post by sst4270 »

Tubetwang,

I reposted the layout. See above.
My apologies for the incorrect layout before.
The power path should be:
Wire from rectifier diodes to One lug of Stand-by switch >
Other lug of stand-by switch to VVR B+ IN >
VVR B+ Out to 1K/25W Resistor.

I was a little confused earlier because the Ceriatone layout is a bit different than a regular Liverpool. Especially on the power supply.

Also I think?? that your pot is wired backwards. That shouldn't be an issue though. It just means that full power will be at full counter clock-wise. and 10% power will be at full clock-wise.

Also I strongly suggest you follow Dana's recommendations and install the two caps and resistors. Otherwise you'll be getting all kinds of noises.
I can help you with that if you're having trouble following the instructions.

Hope this helps. I have to go, but I'll check back tomorrow.
