Get the right tubes and the hiss will be minimized. However, you'll still have some hiss. It's inherent in most high gain amps.

Got a NOS Sylvania 12ax7 in first position and JJ's in the other two.

I know that there is alot of gain there way over the top ( but I like it :D )

Thinking if substituting the first redistor 1K5 to a loarger value 2watt CF 1w CF in there now or maybe metel film ??

would that help ???

or worst cace senario substitute 1k5 resistor for slitly less gain ?

any recomdations , would be appriciated 8)

Wrecks are picky about tubes so you should get at least 2 more NOS 12AX7s or used pulls with good life in them as well as a nice set of power tubes. Buy a few sets of tubes really. The Russian Military EL84s work well in these amps. However, tubes are tubes. Some are noisy, some aren't. Weed through your whole stock of tubes and find the some that work in reducing hiss. I find most of the NOS stuff to be lower noise than new production, however the new stuff is getting better and there are some that are very low noise.

I never noticed much hiss, seemed pretty quiet.
Maybe you have a tube issue. Carbon Comp plate resistors will have more noise than metal film or Carbon Film
You can also put some 120pf caps across your plate resistors, it wont hurt too much high end.

Thanks you guys rock 8)

if these any more sugetions please feel free to post.

These thing are so sensative but I can see if you get the right elements happening they would turn into a ultimate amp.

I wounder what the Glen ( guitar picker ) does can't hear any his on hisa cliups even with single coils .

I think in most of my videos I muted the audio until I started playing. Still, you can hear it a little noise during the playing but not much. I can hear some noise on my CD at points, but it's still not something that really sticks out. It really doesn't bother me that much on my original or my two clones, especially in the studio where playback is much quieter than really being in front of the amp. These amps have alot of gain for an amp you just leave at a quite high gain setting and back your guitar down for clean. It's a compromise at best with the signal to noise that way, but it's still the way to do it with these amps IMHO. In the studio I've actually compared the noise of my original Express to a '68 Marshall plexi 100, with the gain set similar on both amps and the recording gain set to keep the amps at the same playback volume even though the 100 watt amp was obviously louder in the room. This was probably (been a while since I did this) with the Marshall totally dimed and the Express all on 1/2 which is about an even comparison gain wise. At that point I actually found the signal to noise ratio was actually better on the Express than the Marshall when set to similar gain. The Express can obviously get noiser when you really crank it, but that is the price you pay for natural tube gain. Hope that helps! GK

Vishay low noise resistors from Mouser also help. The part number starts with 71-. I have found that in high gain amps, hiss can come from metal film resistors just like it does from carbon comps, especially early in the signal path or from plate resistors. I always uses the Vishay resistors and don't have hiss problems even with rediculous builds that have 6 gain stages. The Vishays are way under rated so 1 watt metal film will likely reduce your noise issues too.

You can eliminate most of the hiss by switching 10k/470 tail/cathode combination in the phase inverter to something higher like 39k/1k. There's a clip here https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=2617 which is the amp set at 2-3 o'clock with a strat and there's not much hiss in the quiet parts.

Almost all the hiss on my Express build is from the 1st stage. Turning down the volume eliminates 98% of the hiss. I'm using the Vishay 3watt MF on that plate and selecting tubes for lowest hiss in that slot. It's still "too much" hiss in my book but I'm out of ideas so I live with it. In a band setting it's much less noticeable.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

Hiss

After talking with Allyn he mentioned the hiss in the Trainwrecks, so I am currently working on selection process for the wreck builds which results in tubes which are extremely low noise. I will post again when I have these available. Obviously I am focusing on the NOS 12ax7 which most like in their V1 position of a wreck.
