Relay/Footswitch questions

Post by benoit »

1. I'm a big dummy. Maybe. I ordered a 4-pin xlr jack for the footswitch instead of 5-pin. Am I screwed? It seems to me that the LED supply could just as easily be split in the footswitch rather than on the relay supply board. OTOH I thought I read recently someone thought that was a bad idea, though I can't remember why. Or why couldn't I just run one 500R between the 12v regulator and the 12v pin (singular in my case) on the FS jack? Wouldn't you get basically the same voltage drop and division of current? I'll buy the 5-pin if I have to (UGH) but I also want to understand this.

2. Is the way the relays are wired in the ceriatone layout advisable? I'm sure it works fine, but is there a better way to do it? I'm having trouble figuring out exactly how things hook up from pics alone.

With respect to the Ceriatone, the wiring shown will put the OD relay OFF when OD is engaged. No problem if you use your own pedal (copy the Ceriatone wirng) but if you use a "Standard Dumble" pedal as shown by Gill (if there is such a thing) your relay will work opposite.

There was some discussion of it here. https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... &start=135

Realize the relay in the overtone layout has a funky layout. The two center poles of the DPDT are at one end rather than in the middle, if you know what I mean.

****Is this for your HRM?? If so then it WILL be different than #124 and the Overtone.

From the pictures it looks like the Real Thing, Brandon's , Gill's and MDRoberts's HRMs all used PC boards. I don't know of a HRM layout showing the hookup on a standard eyelet board, yours may be the first to be posted!!

Try this (based on the LC innards picture and the 101HRM schematic).

I can't imagine why it would be an issue to split the LED supply in the pedal - other than authenticity. I split mine in the pedal - I used a 5 pin but figured I may one day want to add another relay so I left one pin/wire unused.

I split mine in the pedal also, no problems. 5 pin connector for three switches. Gnd, relay/LED supply, and the three relays. Bluesmaster schematic has this setup documented very well. I used a 12v 750ma tranny for supply. Had enough to power a fan as well. I think 12v 450ma is the "standard" for this setup. I think the issue is that if you do not have enough current, power for all three relays and LEDs can drop the voltage below the threshold for switching the relays. The set up we all see on #124, and others has two isolated supplies, one for each of the two foot switches and requires a 5 pin connector for only two switches. Seemed like overkill to me.
