Lap Steel caper

Post by Tubetwang »

Got my copy of Fuzz dvd today...lots of fun...thanks for giving me the word...

Also received Rondo Lap Steel 6 strings guitar...usual 3 day delivery...175$ total for us Canadians...with case.

I'm a sucker for cheap guitars with potential...(read= that i can shamesly rearange).

Not bad of the bat plugged in the old Express...needs a little tweaking and that is the fun part...

All Mahagony (looks like 2 x 1" thick pieces glued together).

I like it!!!

That's awesome. Happy New Lap Steel Day!!!

They have some good guitars at great prices too.

Rondo Music has a very large following on harmonycentral too.

Good score.

I'm literally right up the street from Rondo Music.

They used to be on Route 22 in Hillside, New Jersey. That stretch of 22 was up the road from Newark. It's a divided highway with short driveways to various businesses. No merges, just gas it and pray! Certain stretches of it see 65 mph +, the traffic patterns are pretty murderous. I'd be moving right along, I'd come around the corner and there was Rondo. If you missed it you'd have to drive up the the cloverleaf up the road, then drive most of the way back to Newark, get turned around and make a note to be in the right lane when you came around that corner.

One of America's great White Elephants used to be right up the road. Is the Flagship still there? It was a store built in the shape of a ship in the median. Can you say "screwy traffic patterns"? Picture businesses on either side of the highway then more in the median. At least on that stretch you can cut through someone's parking lot on the median and get turned around.

I could tell you exactly where Rondo is now, you'd drive right past it even if you knew where it is. They're not big on walk-in business these days.

Thanks for the good wishes and i'm glad i did not have to drive there.

Here's a few things i did to it...

Took everything apart like usual and notice problems with the wraparound bridge...

I sanded it down straight to remove the relief and knoched it.

Post were not properly seated...i reseated them lower and glued them solid.

Tighten every screw up, put new strings and intonated it at 23".

I also oiled the Mahagony...it soaked every coats...

I'm real happy with it...a keeper for sure...

I may put new tuners...we'll see.

Thanks to Rondo Music for the great service and great products for us proletarians.

A few low rez pictures for your viewing pleasure...

The two Jazzmasters look-almost-alike are a Rondo SJM57 and a SJM75 that i've cut and sanded down to remove some weight.

I've sanded the neck also...big chunky neck with jumbo frets...i like a C neck with vintage frets.

I traded the bridges on them two guitars to make the strings fit the pick-ups, changed the pick-ups for Alnico 5 that i had around my part's bin. Changed mini pots for regular job Alpha's. The plug was replaced for a Switchcraft along with new keys.

PS. got Glen's CD in the mail...All killers, no fillers.
Must have!!
Only 10$
On par with Mark Knofler if i'm so bold as saying!!!
Don't take my word for it just Paypal the man!!!

wow, I like the look of that lap steel... Rondo has som killer deals. I bought their Agile quilt top sunburst Les Paul copy and their red SG standard copy before they tweeked the shapes to avoid lawsuits... They are every bit as nice, and perhaps nicer than the Epiphone versions. The SG has become my main instrument because it's so light and plays so well.

I also own several real Gibsons, and unless I absolutely need something that only the real thing does, I grab the Agile SG 90% of the time.

Rondo closed the doors a few years ago, internet business took over.

Too bad, I bought my first electric guitar from them, Dano like Pagey's, 35 hard earned paperboy $$'s

That place started life in the 40's as a nightclub. My sax teacher Lou Grassie played there for years. Many of the big bands came to play there. They'd often travel with just key players and hire the rest locally. Lou played with Jimmy Dorsey, Glen Miller, etc all through the 40's when sight reading was not a lost art.

Last I saw it was still there, but empty. There's almost no parking so it's hard to make a go of it there. Cool building though.

Yeah, I bought a SX tele knockoff for a spare to have on stage in case I broke a string on my strat.
I think I paid $110 for it. Butterscotch blond.
I've thought about refinishing it but.......nah, good bang for the buck.

That lap steel looks cool!
Was the mahogany unfinished?
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

I think so Tom. If there's a finish at all it is extremely thin.

It soaked all the oil that i threw at her...

It takes a strong personnality to go up on stage with one of those. But Nick don't give a fuck...the kid was born and raised with guitars and amps...

Here's a clip of Nick Curran and Fabulous T-Birds with a straight 100$ Rondo guitar paying his dues in Spain.

Let's see what old Nick can do with it plugged into a good amp...

MERCY!!!
