I have to ask, what did you use for the blue and black goo sticky stuff? Love the looks!

Most of the pictures I have seen look like he was using regular silicone glue. I got some black and blue RTV (room temp. vulcanizing) silicone glue at the hardware store.

From what I could tell, I think these are the reasons he used the glue:

1) The big radial 300uf caps are held on the board by the glue
2) Almost all the smaller axial electrolytics are glued to perhaps keep strain off the leads. Less chance of mechanical failure?
3) It is opaque, so it can conceal where needed.

I think he used SILICONE rather than tar, 'construction adhesive' or epoxy because:
1) The silicone is a dielectric
2) Silicone can be easily cut with a knife and components can be dug out and changed if needed.

In terms of any 'sonic' changes with the silicone, well, AIR is a better dielectric than silicone, so I really think added mechanical strength and secrecy are the real benefits.
Any other thoughts on it?

I don't know if others that are into electric guitar amps like this stuff but I think these sounds are incredible. More harmonically rich than many amps. And the snap when they shift is like the ultimate snap betwen notes on the Dumble.

I'm reviving this thread to post something that may be total BS but it seems real. This amp seems to have 'burned in' over the years to transform itself into something totally amazing. Just to recap the last 12 pages, this amp was built 100% like the 124 pictures and I made all the component values match what 124 was thought to be when photographed. Initially it had a tone that almost everyone set out to change and I suspect there are not that many 124 type amps that retained all of 124's exact circuit.

Anyway, the amp now has the most fantastic singing tone. I now matches Gil's description of the original 124 ("Nothing Harsh at all in the tone"). It also has a LOT of gain in the clean channel, more that what I remember when I first built it. Again it now matches Gil's description of the original 124.

I'm so glad I did not change anything from the 124 schematic.

Total hours probably not that much seeing as I have 10 amps and I'm not a professional musician, but it has cycled on-off quite a bit.

So it seems if something has changed (not that I doubt your ears) part of the cause could just be age, as opposed to "break-in" in the usual sense, and this also has implications with regard to the notion that old parts were made differently and for that reason sound better than new production ones....

Your playin is fine, but your tone is IMO a little bit too fuzzy to be a 'real' dumble tone for my taste.
