I use 2 sammi 300b50 (12" 50w) speakers in my 15w Liverpool combos. They are open back Marshall style cabs and sound great to me. YMMV

Hey Harry,
Like I said, the Weber is darker than either of the Celestions. I've never tried an Eminence, so I can't say. :)

Do you have any idea if Weber Alnico Silver Bell is nearby Celestion Gold or Eminence Red Fang soundwise? That Silver Bell darker sound could tame Express brightness. Harry
I’d like to start a religion. That’s where the money is.

:) It is a pity that all speakers you recommend for an open back Express amp are very hard to buy here in Finland. Maybe I have to start to check if I could order them (Weber or Scumback or Sammi) straight from states especially now when euro against dollar is pretty strong. Harry

I have a single 12 with a Scumback M75 which is their G12M 25 watter clone. However I wanted this cab to be able to handle a fully cranked Express, so I got the M75 with the high power 65 watt cone that they also offer.

Is this cab open or closed back? I think that it has a remarkable effect on sound. What is the biggest different soundwise? Despite I would like to test all possible speaker alternatives, it is financially not very clever. I know that I will never reach the same sound out of a 1x12" open back cab compared to closed 4x12", but I would like to find a good compromise. Harry

You might not believe this, but I run the Scumback M75 w/65 watt cone in a totally sealed 1x12 I made out of a parted out Gallien Krueger microbass combo amp I picked up for $15. At 13x13.5x7.5 the cab is virtually as small as a 1x12 could be. It's made of 1/8" thick aluminum and I doubt you could even make one that small out of wood. I bandsawed off the amp chassis mountings to make it into an extension cab. Anyway, miked through a PA this cab sounds very good actually better than my MESA theile port 1x12 ever did and I tried that cab stock, open back, and sealed with about 10 different speakers over the years. Not much sound (low end wise) onstage unless it is monitored, but it really kicks through a nice pa with the Sennheiser e906 mic right up close. I put 4 layers of felt behind the metal grill, to simulate the mellowing effect basketweave cloth has on my 4x12s...

I put this cabinet together mainly for fly dates. On a side note I also took an Orange Tiny terror and modded it, mainly by bypassing a gain stage and putting in Sozo caps throughout. That made the amp much clearer and cleaner, and better for use with a pedal board setup. The cool thing is the Orange amp AND the 1x12 will both fit in one suitcase and still fall under the 50lb checked baggage limit. I used it on a gig fly date in TX with a national county artist a couple weeks back through a huge outdoor PA and it sounded VERY impressive. I couldn't even tell the amp was on standing right next to it, but monitored back through the 1x15 wedges it was huge. Not bad for a 30lb rig, and better than taking chances on the provided rental backline.

All that said, the micro cab worked out so well I've been using it with my Wrecks at guitar clinics too, but I mike it in that situation also.

More information than you asked for! You can really see how small the cab is, next to the non-reverb deluxe which is even smaller than a deluxe reverb.

:D Now that is an interesting solution. Maybe I skip a combo model and build an Express to a small head cabin and a 1x12" closed back cabin. I already have one closed back cabin with G12H30 but for some reason its sound is not very impressive. I have already done one Liverpool to a pretty small head cabin so I have some experience to put those amps to small space. I f you want to look what I have done ampwise you can check my web pages www.bluetone.fi Harry

harryk wrote:I am planning to make a 1x12" open back Twreck Express combo with 6V6 tubes. I try to make a lightweight amp which is also physically as small as possible. I have tried 2 x Greenbacks in open back cabin but I did not like that sound. To my mind they are better in closed back cabins. Scumbacks are difficult to import to Finland where I live. I know that Ken aimed Express to be used with 4x12" cabin, but the older you get, the more you appreciate light amps when gigging. Harry
scumbacks are easy to import to europe. I recommend H75 or 55 for open cabs - M75s are best for closed caps - preferably 4x12"s

I ended up to buy a Celestion Heritage Series G12-65 element. I will test it when I get that combo ready. It will take sometime to get it done due to summer vacation etc. I paid some 200 USD of that element. Harry
