103 Db sensitivity
just had an eye opener....... Ive been useing a celestion g12h-100
for a very long time ..... always liked it..... today I used for giggles
a JBL-E120-8 with a sensitivity of 103db...... it was night and day
I run very simple amps...... 50w p\p paraphase inverter..... simple
tone vol. thats it....... the jbl made the 50 feel like 100..... very tone forward
clear...... changed the entire character of the amp.... my favorite celestion
hasnt been doing it any justice .....
any opinions or favorite models?..... with a high sens. in mind.

I have a pair of JBL K-120's and a pair of Celestion G12-75's (no T in the model number) in my late 70's Marshall 4x12. The K-120's are so clear and tight and LOUD, that they just sound fantastic. Note - K-120's are 100 watt Alnico speakers.
Re: 103 Db sensitivity
The Celestion G12 Century has a sensitivity of 103 dB. It has a neodymium magnet and is very light. It is quite bright as most speakers with rare earth magnets, but if you have a darker sounding amp it might be just what you need! It is quite loud– twice as loud as one with a 100 dB sensitivity.Andy Le Blanc wrote: ... any opinions or favorite models?..... with a high sens. in mind.

Re: 103 Db sensitivity
it nice to be able to have your cake and eat it too
love the alnico..... but the apparent power of more efficient speaker is usefull
eminance is every where..... their redfang and wizard models have a high
advertised SPL...... but where does one find the rateings for weber?
another thought...... anybody ever play with cabinet switching?

E120s were popular for a while in 1980s if IRC.
They were/are still great for cutting through the mix.
For some reason they fell from grace amongst some. Don't really know why, heard that some considered them too shrill - ??.
I've still a couple of ported cabs loaded with E120s, heavy SOBs.

Re: 103 Db sensitivity
Ive seen some negative comments on them too
when I installed the thing and gave it a listen in the shop I understood why
it tweakes the tone a bit...... broader freq. responce than a typical guitar driver...
I was questioning the choice...
but on stage it was a monster that had great tone to boot.....
and it is heavy..... Beyma makes and markets under the JBL name a thing
called a liberty-8 thats supposedly an equivilant..... but its pricey....
$ 260 ish....... but in a closed box it might be worth it .... single 12"
with a 300 watt handling ability..... with a pair of these and 100 watt tube
I think I could knock over livestock from 100 yards.....

Re: 103 Db sensitivity
You guys are probably aware of this brand already, but Warehouse Guitar Speakers are pretty efficient, and a good twist on the common Celestion tones:
http://www.warehouseguitarspeakers.com/
I've been *very* impressed with the quality of build and tone from these. The only thing I don't like, is they don't mix well with real Celestion because they are more effiecent then the Celestions they cop and sorta drown them out in a 4X12.
I have Green Berets and Veteran 30's in some random 2x12 and have been very pleased with them...especially after some good break in time.

You would expect the sensitivity (SPL) to be listed in the spec's of a given speaker, but I don't see any spec's listed on Weber's site

Re: 103 Db sensitivity
I just ordered one of the Weber speakers. Now you guys got me curious about the spec...If you look at the Weber site, there's a section on speaker terminologies. He talks about SPL. It sounds like he doesn't like giving a spec for it. I guess he's reasoning is because the freq response plot (SPL vs freq) of the speaker is not flat.
Re: 103 Db sensitivity
Well you didn't say it had to be a 12" so my favorite is the Eminence Legend 1518 with a 102db rating. Just a great sounding speaker! Makes my 5F1 Champ sound huge!
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

Re: 103 Db sensitivity
single ended and efficient......
I was thinking that weber deosnt because its a custom service....
that would be impractical......
but id like to see specs on their standard models.....
as a smaller outfit the testing might be too much of an investment......
maybe in the future

Re: 103 Db sensitivity
I think the Cannabis Rex by eminence is the best sounding speaker I've heard.
I tried this in a lot of amps and it sounds twice as loud in all of them.
My Carr slant 6 is amazing with them. I like the Carr kingpin speakers but tried a weber blue dog and silver bell as recommended by Weber. I later tried the 12f150 and had settled on the Weber G1265's and have been using them since 04.
I bought an eminence Red,white and blue and cannabis rex for my pro reverb and tried them in the carr.
The C rex has a very high spl. I think its 103db but it might be 102db. It definitely made the amp seem much louder.
I have read nothing but great reviews on the C rex but I have heard people say they are dark and low middy. I disagree. They are plenty bright and have theis low end that is hard to describe. Even when played clean it has a low end that hits you in the chest and doesn't mush out. Its a wore out term but the low end is like a grand piano.
Its my favorite 12" speaker out there now.
