HAD's comments on the RATIO control...WTF?

Post by ic-racer »

This is from that HAD interview with by Dan Forte ( here if you have never read it : http://209.85.215.104/search?q=cache:Ls ... Ft%3D24532 )

"The secret control on the Overdrive's panel section is the ratio control, which controls how much overdrive is fed back into the circuit. If you turn that up, it's Rock City. "

To me that implies that the RATIO mixes the clean and overdrive sounds??? Could there be some trace on the OD relay board that combines the two signals? Obviously, anyone who has played a real Dumble can verify how the thing is supposed to work.

At least according to all the non-HRM schematics I have seen, the RATIO and MASTER are in series, right after one another. So it doesn't seem like there would be much difference between RATIO up and MASTER down or visa-versa. Like you can't overdrive the PI unless BOTH MASTER and RATIO are up.

Am I missing something here? Does anyone know what he is talking about? Has this been discussed before? Anyone seen the bottom of the OD relay board and know for sure where all the traces hook up?

<edit:Retraction of inane comment.>
I agree, there is no mixing going on.

Keep in mind that at the time of that article,the ratio control was a fairly new addition, earlier ODS amps had this pre-set inside the amp. I think he was simply trying to sell amps. :D

There's that whacked out comment on the video clip with Henry Kaiser where he has some very strange and vague comments on why tubes sound better than transistors. I think he's intentionally positioned himself way up the voodoo/mojo chain through obfuscation and silicone goo.

HAD's comments on the ratio control may be the psychological equivalent of 'blue goo" - just another attempt to throw copy-cats off the trail. Or, mabye he was dumbing-down his explanation of the control for the masses.

Just the fact that he named them so 'non-intuitively' (among other things) seems to indicate that deception was part of his game. If he wanted to dumb it down he probably wouldn't have named them what he did.
