Re: Components?
I built an HRM with Metal Oxide Plate resistors and it's fantastic, I dn't know what the taboo is all about. Probably comes from the same people who think that Noisy flame hazzard Carbon comps are the coolest thing since DDT.

Re: Components?
they`ve never worked for ME using later circuits, my HOPE is that MOST of the people here will take both MINE and YOUR opinions on this topic with a grain of salt, and search out out for themselves, and certainly believe they will, peace, jimgroovtubin wrote:howd ya guess??Funkalicousgroove wrote:I built an HRM with Metal Oxide Plate resistors and it's fantastic, I dn't know what the taboo is all about. Re: Components?
I have always felt unequivocal comments, in the context we're talking about here, need to be taken with a grain of salt. Some folks say only carbon comps are worthy, others (some of them very well-respected) say silver mica caps are the only ones one should use in tone stacks, etc. In the end, an amp is at least the sum of all its parts, if not more than that, so I think there is a lot of leeway to accommodate just about anything one chooses to use.Funkalicousgroove wrote:I built an HRM with Metal Oxide Plate resistors and it's fantastic, I dn't know what the taboo is all about. Dumble himself is a very good example of this, since it looks as though he used anything he could get his hands through the years, and still was capable of ending up with a good sounding amp. Having said all of the above, I am not one to try too many different things after I believe I've arrived at a "winning formula." I have never used metal oxide resistors in the audio path, so I don't know how well they would work in my amps. For the longest time I used NTE metal film resistors everywhere, and relatively recently I retrofitted only V1 and V2's plate load resistors with the dales that I later mentioned to Scott. I liked the result "arguably better," and have seen no reason to change since. I have not tried the dales anywhere else in the circuit -- other than the slope position -- but I've heard some reports that maybe one could run into one of those "too much of a good thing" situations.
In the last amp I built, I ended up with a mixed bag of parts. With the exception of the slope resistor, these are the same parts being discussed here. For the slope, I use a 1% metal film that I found at a local surplus store here in L.A., and I like the sound of it compared to both a dale or the older metal film I used to use -- could it be all inside my head? Quite possibly. Here's a picture of the preamp:

On the couplig cap front, Scott said in another thread that I like Xicon MPPs, and I still prefer (factors considered: sound, price and physical size) those to others I've tried, which are NTE Mylars (my second favorites) and a few different types of orange drops (my least favorite type, for lack of a better description).
Cheers,
Gil
Re: Components?
Hi Gil,
Thanks for the pic! Is this the new one??
Fwiw, I had a bunch of the RN65 resistors I had on hand from long before you mentioned them.... I had just not decided to really audition them until we corresponded. Up until then, I had some in one amp, none in another, etc.....
Maybe I'll go back and recap the Glaswerks and see if I hear a difference between the MPP and PS series......
Shoudl be fun

Re: Components?
Nice! I see you have a separeate 12.6V transformer.. Do you use that for relay voltage?Normster wrote:Hopefully this will give you a head start. Most part numbers and suppliers are accurate, but quantities (especially for resistors) aren't even in the ball park. I was working this up to confirm my suspician that it ain't cheap to build an amp from scratch.
Re: Components?
Also interesting to see that you use a Marshall PT. I've been thinking about a Bassman 100 PT replacement.
Is there a group-favorite PT and OT for building ODS?

1. Scott: that amp is very recent, yes -- I thought I had already sent you pictures of it a couple of weeks ago, when that baby "was born"?dogears wrote:Hi Gil,

2. FWIW II: Sure, I'll only accept credit for merely pointing out to you that the solution to your quest was actually much closer than you had imagined.

Re: Components?
1) You did, just not the preamp section.....
2)
You da man......
3) How did that Excel sheet look that I sent??

Re: Components?
the excel sheet looks great!
Maybe you didn't see my post above, but is the 12.6V transformer for the realy coils?
Any particular reason for using a Marshall PT, other than it's a nice transfomer
..
ehh... I'm answering the wrong person I realise now.... sorry

Heya Gil,
nice amp!
Seems like the preamp board of one of my amps looks like a twin to your amp!
Cheers,
Dominik

Re: Components?
Dominik,
Do you have the .0047 cap on V2a? I see the 150k series resistor of V2b attached to a larger cap than what is on V2a (which appears to have the V2a 100k resistor) I tried this but preferred the .01 on V2a and the .0047 on V2b
