I'd like to see the tube sockets better, but from what I see I can make a few comments.

1) Put in terminal strips so that the components on the sockets aren't hanging.
2) Swap out the silver mica caps with ceramics. ScottL told me about this one and it really DOES make a difference.
3) Check out the grounds, some of the solder joints look a bit funky, especally the cathodes and the one by the PT.
one odd thing though.. my OD channel has gone quiet.. like half the volume of the clean channel.. might be a cold solder joint or something... gonna keep lookin..

Also... i have a like "fuzz" around the notes.. mainly if you attack hard, its on the clean channel and the OD channel.. kinda sounds like when you keep playing after hitting the power switch.. that draining caps sound...
Probibly related.

Doh.. and i forgot to put that 4.7m from treb cap to ground.. will do now.. I am curious though.. 4.7 being a TON of resistance.. what does that do exactly?
That's only needed if you have the 2 treble caps, it's to prevent the click when you switch.

Looks like a decent build so far. I'd bet you'll get it sounding great in time.

Thanks for the advice..

I am giong to have to go through the tonestack again... i had posted too soon before:)

It seems that flipping the boost switch is bypassing the treble pot totally.. i can have the treble all the way down flick that switch and its all the way up.. and also seems to mess up my mid/bass controls... but i will triple check my wiring on that one..

That's correct. The boost's function is to disable the tone stack.

Hmmm... Where to begin.... Just IMHO but, I don't like Mallory 150 caps in these amps. Try PS series Orange Drops or even the burgundy Xicon MPP series. The 150s are terribly dull sounding. I put them in one time, played three notes, then took them out!

Next, replace all the carbon film plate resistors with good metal films. I like the Vishay Dale RN65 type that Mouser carries. You can totally hear it.

Bye bye to the silver micas next..... Even the grid bypass..... Use a good ceramic. The SL rated ones I like.

Sorry to make more work for you!!! Maybe Bob I can chime in on the resistor thing..... Keeping in mind he swapped from metal films to the VIshays.

Are those 2K screen resistors???? If so, use 1K max.... Or 470 ohm.

I haven't tried the 150's with a Dumble, but the PS Orange drops are excellent.

Before he starts screwing around though, I think we need to help him get this amp healthy. Sounds like he's got some wiring and soldering issues. It takes time.......

Scott's right... as usual... :) The silver Mica's are highly recomended by Torres.... that why I started using them but Scott's got me using ceramics. For this type of amp they sound FAR better.

The Vishay's are pretty dramatic. The top end is at the same time smoother and more present.

I missed that.... 470 for sure..... makes a BIG difference.

Icetech....(and dogears) I'm on AOL IM as bobi49 or available by phone. Scott and I talk often and I'm happy to talk to you about your amp. I think you can get this right, your 90% there.

Dog and bob, thank you much for all the tips... this is the kind of info we need in the files section:)

And i was suspect of the 150's my last 2 amps, the other being a california dreamer i used 150's in and it had the same sorta blah, lackluster sound that im getting right now... with the gain cranked up they sound ok.. but other than that..

I am going to make a BOM of what i need to order in the morning and hit mouser:) hope i can get the right stuff.. i tend to order the wrong parts 3 times then get it right:)

kinda funny, i have xircon (xicon?) maroon caps sitting here i have never used, thought they were just orange drop ripoffs.. funny...

Sorry, it's been 3 years since I built this amp. It still sounds great but I haven't open it in at least 2 years. No I don't have a schem.

Bob,
I'd love to hear the clips but I'm having trouble accessing them. Are they not up anymore or is the problem on my end?

Sorry, it's been 3 years since I posted this. The ISP is gone, so are the clips. :(

Doh.. yeah, I figured that out about 30 seconds after I posted :D I didn't remember hearing the clips and I thought it was because it was a new post. I actually HAVE heard 'em, it's just been forever...
