DUMBLE AND MOSRITE ?

Post by JSLOBAUGH »

A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO I CAME ACROSS A MOSRITE TUBE HEAD COSMETICALLY BEAT AND BATTERED. I FIRED IT UP AND TO MY SURPRISE IT STILL SOUNDED PRETTY DARN GOOD. MY INTENTION WAS TO DO A RESTORATION ON THE UNIT. UNFORTUNATELY ALL I CAME UP WITH WAS DEAD ENDS... UNTIL I HEARD ABOUT DUMBLE AND SEMI MOSLEY BUILDING 10 PROTOTYPES THAT NEVER MADE THE PRODUCTION LINE. THE SERIAL ON THIS IS HAND SCRIBED #00007.
I WILL SEND PICS IF ANYONE MIGHT BE ABLE TO SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS LONG OVERDUE MYSTERY...

About 2-3 years ago a Mosrite head appeared on US ebay for a short time. Seller was auctioning mixed items from a deceased estate and not interested in shipping OS. Needless to say the auction (with a starting price of $50US) ended without a bid. I couldn't believe with all the amp builders in the states ( probably more than the total population of the country in which I live)that it would go unrecognized. I waited for relist but it didn't happen.

According to what I've read about HAD, and others are probably much more knowledgeable on this topic, one of his first commercial amp building efforts was building a set of amps for use by the Ventures under the Mosrite brand. I seem to recall that, even though the Ventures liked them and toured with them, the agreement with Mosrite never really went anywhere. So I suppose that those early HAD "Mosrites" might still be out there.

Can anyone else shed light on this bit of HAD's history?

Drop me a note with your phone number. I am from Bakersfield originally and still have contacts there that worked for Mosrite (and knew Dumble) at that time frame.

Just to help me place a sound to the Mosrite name, on what recordings did the Ventures use Dumble's amps?
The only thing of theirs I've heard that at all resembles a dumble sound is "Underground Fire", which I have to say is pretty inspirational.
Please share what you discover. This is a topic that has interested me for a while. Thanks.
