Two nonHRM clips

Post by mat »

Here is two clips of my nonHRM Skyline, first with 6L6's and the second with EL34's. I'm very satisfied with it now (nice dumblyish growl on the room) except I got loud bark sound when hitting certain note on the fretboard. I cutted them off from the second clip.Sorry, it is fading out and in few times. I looked on the back of the amp and when I hitted THE note and when the bark came the other 6L6 flashed blue light. I got Fender style standalone tubereverb on the built in dumbleator. After removing the reverb I did not get the bark again. Hmm..

The playing sucks. Was just listening to the amp/first take..blah blah..

First clip was recorded with SM57 10cm from the grille + AKG (something) about 1-2m from the speaker. Second was Sennheiser (something-I'll check those later) + the AKG. I added little delay + reverb on the Reaper recording software.

Credit goes to Ayan for helping me to tune the amp :D 8)

Sounds great mat. Smooth gentle tone with plenty of grit and grain. Nice playing too.

Beautiful mat! Nice string-like singing quality.... Guitar (PUP) and amp settings?

Nothing sucky about the playing. Tonewise, I liked the 6L6 clip better.

mat,
Both clips sound very good and the playing far from sucks. Which tubes do you like best in the room? The 6L6's at that setting really want to take off, don't they? I like the honk in those EL34's. Either setup would do it for me. Cool.

6L6 for me too. Very sweet sound, with good harmonics. Really nice response from the amp!

Your'e too hard on yourself. The solo has dynamics and great touch, similar to LC himself. 8)

How loud was the amp?

Great sounds.
Was the speaker RWB and what kind of coax are you using in your amps?

Wow! Thanks for all for Your kind and engouraging words.

I'll try to answer Your guestions as best I can.

Bob-I, yes I like the smoothnes of the sound. That is something I've been searched for a while now. I can eaven dig harder to the stings with the pick without the sound getting too harsh, so I can play with heavier hand.

odourboy, Guitar was Ibanez 335-style with Duncan 59's. Amp settings:
pre volume (o'clock) 1 or 2
bright off
midboost (as in Normsters HRM97 layout) on
rock\jazz = rock
treble 1
mid 10 or 11
bass 9 or 10
PAB off
drive 2
od master 8-9
built in d-lator send and return turned to slight boost (diy standalone tubereverb on the loop) Btw. watching the Robben Fords new Rockpalast gig I'm really enjoying more and more of the spring reverb sound. It really is great companion with the D-style amps IMO. There is not much of the tubereverb on the clips.

G-Dorian, It seems to be hard decision to choose which tubes I like the most. 6L6 seems to be livelier but EL34's are smoother in my amp.

Stelligan, thanks. I have not made up my mind which tubes I like best. The 6L6's really seems to feedback easier. I don't think it was just the place where I was playing. Btw. I'm getting little bored to the feedback because it seems to be an artform itself to use it musical way which I cannot do. IMO Carltons 'Last Nite' has beautiful examples how to use the feedback.

HiGain, Thanks for Your kind words. The OD master was at 8-9 o'clock whick was not near at gigging volume although my amp seems to get loud quite soon when turning the OD master up.

spm, thanks, would like to have Your fingers tho  I like Your phrasing alot (+ great website) Setings abowe.

ukulele, speaker was Celestion Heritage 12-65 on a diy cabinet (I'll promise to post pics if when I get the time). The coax I think is not so high grade, which might be a good thing with these beasts

Gil, thanks again You made my day :!:

Btw, I think I nailed the bark-bug. No solder on one turret of the tubereverb

The mics (fwiw) on the first clip were Shure SM57 (about 10cm) + AKG C414 B-TL II (about 1.5m).
The second clip was Sennheiser MD 441U3 (about 10cm) + AKG C414 B-TL II (about 1.5m).

Mat - Really nice tone - especially the 6L6's - which seemed to have more length (that wasn't time related) than the EL34's if that makes sense.

To my ears the 6L6's really captured the timbre of the violin and had me thinking, Nigel Kennedy cover that!

Well done!
