Gibson 355 Waffle back tuners

Post by angelodp »

Hi, have a nice 355 here with waffle back tuners. They have the requisite patina and some grunge. They turn well but a tad loose. I can clean these up with naphtha and I am wondering about repacking. If you have experience with this sort of thing. Is it fine to bathe them in mineral spirits to clean, then repack through the tuner stem space with lithium grease? Or, clean with Naphtha and simply add grease? Any preferred lube I should know about?

Thanks

White grease. Have you seen one disassembled?

Check this thread. Down the page you start seeing guys talking about drilling out the brass rivets. Don't have to use a drill, just the bit or even a push drill is better.

What you described could be the string shaft gear is loose and overriding the driving gear,
1) I drilled out the 2 eyelets that are holding the tuner together using a 1/8" drill bit. They are Brass and it is soft metal so it drills out easily.

2) Fixed the issues I was having (it was bent). By taking it apart I was able to put it in a vice and bend it back into shape.

3) Purchased some new eyelets (brass, 1/8" by 1/4") Thanks to RickRandoms advice

Thanks, what thread please? After working them for a while they seem to be behaving. Guitar was not used for a long while.

Sorry about that, I decided to copy the info then got distracted before pasting the link!

Ohh! 65? I have a "61 mono with the most vain serial number of any guitar I have ever seen.
