Old Sovtek 12AX7WXT+ vs. WXT vs. whatever?

Post by nuke »

Rummaging through my stash of stuff in the garage. Have several NIB SovtekWXT+ from years ago. People seemed to want them back in the day, but I don't remember why, or what's different about them and the WXT from the same era, or really whatever makes them "special".

Googling doesn't really turn up anything concrete. Lot of opinions, ranging from "best ever" to "sounds awful".

Out of production for a long time now.

Anyone remember what the deal was/is or is it just a plain old 12AX7 with a lot of cork-sniffing adjectives thrown at by random?

At that time they on average had a tad higher gain then their regular crap!
That said they still did not really sound better.

Note that depending where a tube is used, it's not gain that for example drives a tone section better, it's the tube's current output.

This is why a bunch of folks like a 12AY7 in the first socket of many Fender amps and others even though some gain is lost.

Yeah, I figured it was just different ink.

The wxt+ is stamped in black, the wxt in white ink, and the sovtek WA's from my old stock look exactly the same except with a silvery plate structure.

The rest is the lovely aroma of forest loam and minerality with a hint of citrus.
