Version opinion for the group

I stumbled upon this site many years ago and decided to build an ODS (I want to say it was from 102 or 105 schematics maybe. Memory not that great any more ). It sounded great, with humbuckers, but I was much less than thrilled with single coils (i.e. strats). Just wondering if there is a particular model or version of the schematics listed on this site that works well with both pu styles?

I've built #183 several times, and think it's great for single coils.

I've built a #124. Works great with both. Lots of clean headroom, even with high output humbuckers. Great thick overdrive, without getting muddy. And very versatile, too. It can make a Tele sing.

Thanks for the replies. Do you know if there is a low wattage dumble build? Say a 20 watt version?

My favorite Stratocaster config is 124 low plate skyliner but with the deep switch circuit tagged on. I run it with deep and bright engaged.

I also have the OD high frequency taper like you see in 123... this allows you to dial in a clean tone that is somewhere between Fender and Dumble, but also balance out some of the highs in overdrive mode if needed.

124 lp skyliner is pretty single coil friendly even with the stock schematic. I tried adding on the deep switch circuitry just as a fun experiment, and loved it.

My go-to things with this setup is deep + bright for Strat, maybe taper some OD highs out. For Tele I go deep switch off, and engage bright depending on the guitar and room. The HF taper again works well here if you are running bright. For humbucker guitars deep/bright off, no hf taper, just the standard amp. Rock mode always (although jazz mode is cool don't sleep on it) and my mid boost is on a foot switch.. I use it as a thickener with PAB.

Another approach here would be to use a bright relay and wire your switching for a 'bright on clean only' setup like a lot of people do. I have that setup in my 102 and it works well, although for SC guitars the 124 is just easier to work with IMO.

There are some lower wattage D style amps out there. I have an old Brown Note 22/33 head that's kinda cool. Will run 6v6's for 22w or 6l6's for 33w. Though I have to say the sound of 6v6's with the ODS circuit is not my most favorite thing. I build my little stage friendly combos with the Edcor CXPP35 O/T (35w Express style) and a fairly standard 50w power section. I find it gives me a nice combination of 'sounds loud' while not getting me yelled at by bar owners for actually being that loud. Depending on your intended use, something similar might work for you.

The Snowflake is great with both single coils and humbuckers.

My version has the cathode driver added. I have built quite a few of these.
