Are you sure the noise is coming from the power amp? Maybe you are getting partial cancellation of the noise when running PP. Any schematic/pictures of the amp?

Hmm that's an interesting idea. It is definitely intermodulation distortion. Leaving a low string ringing and then bending notes above it you can hear the low harmonic out of tune bending in the opposite direction.

Is this local negative feedback increasing headroom or that my imagination?

For better or worse, it remains stuck until the recipient reads it. <shrug>

It's not really stuck. That's a feature that tells you the message has not been read. I like that feature.

The bummer is that the forum software no longer sends out notifications to one's email account notifying them that they have a PM. Or if it does work, it's a very rare fluke. Our former, intrepid sysop could never make any headway with the site owner to do an upgrade, so, here we are...

I have never relied on email notifications for PMs. Anytime I send a PM I will be frequently checking on the forum.

So I still have the unbypassed portion of the cathode resistor installed but I feel I've lost sparkle and drive but maybe my imagination... can I clip a small bypass cap across the unbypassed resistor to compare?

Yes any value cap you want as long as it’s rated for a high enough voltage.
