Ripple Current??? :: ESR??? :: Filter Cap Question :: ODS Build

Post by TimDude »

I'm currently seeking out parts for an ODS #124 build. I've got almost everything on the list except for those pesky filter caps that seem difficult to come by in 300uF 350V. I'm curious, if I'm going to buy alternatives, such as Vishay/BC Components 22uF 400V or 22uF 450V, are there other values I should be concerned with? I have been doing a little bit of research and terms like "ripple current" and "EST rating" seem important to some people on the Internet. I'm curious, are those things I should be concerned about? If so, what values should I be looking for? Here are two capacitors I was deciding between:

Link to capacitor one, 220uF, 400V, ESR = 470 mOhms, Ripple Current = 1.15A: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Vi ... KpfA%3D%3D
Link to capacitor two, 220uF, 450V, ESR = 820 mOhms, Ripple Current = 1.59A: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Vi ... niAQ%3D%3D
I'll throw a 3rd capacitor here too for fun...
Link to capacitor three, 300uF, 550V, ESR = 567 mOhms, Ripple Current = 2A: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/KE ... a0Mw%3D%3D

If these are things I shouldn't be concerned about, it's fine if you say that. If there are other things I should be concerned about instead, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

I used ROE caps for my reservoir and Sprague TVA for the rest in my 124. Also used the ROE in my 183

ROE cap on eBays:

Im not sure of the ESR/Ripple current but they sound great.

For a new comber this is a bit too deep down the rabbit hole for concern . get quality aluminum electrolytic capacitors rated for the proper voltage, correct lead terminations that will fit in your layout , with close enough values and you will be fine . 220 uf works well enough.

Thanks for the replies. I did some more Googling (tampering with different words in the search) and finally came across some answers I was looking for. Hopefully I'm not generalizing too much with this next statement: I'm reading that the bigger the "Ripple Current" and the smaller the "ESR" the better the capacitor is. If I'm wrong, please correct me! I think I'm going to give those KEMET caps a try that I linked in my original post. They have a high Ripple Current rating and a low ESR rating and I'm getting the original 300uF rating. I considered doing smaller uF ratings in parallel, such as 2 x 150uF 500V caps in place of each of the 300uF 500V caps, but I think that would just be getting carried away.

Imho… BC sound great …and have a long rated lifespan …

Cheers

I've read good things about the BC as well. Have you tried the Kemet brand caps? Part of me is willing to give the Kemet brand a try, that particular cap I linked is rated for a great lifespan. I've seen their caps used elsewhere. I'm still not 100% which way I'm going to go. Part of me doesn't want too tight of a bottom end, so part of me wants to try a lower uF rating closer to 200uF or 220uF. I've seen those values used in other Dumble schematics and builds. Now you've got me reconsidering... AGAIN!

the definition of what constitutes an audio quality smoothing capacitor will certainly instigate a debate , with that disclaimer in mind it’s interesting to note the Kemet are designed for applications in automobiles.

I don’t have any experience with Kemet. Snap in terminals aren’t as convenient for the usual eyelet board layouts, so that generally limits my own choices , but it’s not impossible to make them work.

It’s really easy to overthink the nuances .

Do they matter ? Absolutely, but you gotta start somewhere , and the typical values available will give you results that will usually satisfy most peoples expectations.

It’s easier to consider the nuances once the experience is under the belt . You can listen to others opinions, but it’s all subjective in the end. 220uf can be too tight for some , but with a different player it’s too loose still.. . But there are also other ways to tighten the sound and/or the power supply ; lots of possibilities…rabbit hole

Start simple . My dad would always tell me keep it simple stupid . I find this is usually appropriate advice.
