I have a Standell artist. It’s 20 watt with two 6BQ5 output tubes and those solid state block preamps. The preamps are missing so I added a parallel 12aX7 to it And did Kevin O’Connor’s soma amp. It runs clean and loud and a pretty solid 20 watts. But the tone control is lacking for me in the design. It’s an unusual design And the volume pot for one half of the phase inverter to one of the push pull power tubes to lower the drive and unbalance the output sounds bad to my ears. I’ve seen this used on a mesa boogie and did not likes affect.
I’ve been hearing David Grissom and his PRS DG 30 amp and just wow. He could make anything sound fabulous so there’s that first. My question is that amp reminds me of an early Marshall plexi sound kind of.
So I would be using 20 watt 2 6BQ5 tubes instead of four. As far as the design of the preamp and phase inverter, Do you think the circuit is kind of like a Liverpool with a high cut added to the phase inverter? For some reason it sounds like it may have a cathode follower driving a tone control maybe like a matchless lightning.
The master volume is said to not sound right unless it’s up at least 80%. So is it across the phase invert with a single pot. Or post tone control? With feedback for the presence, it would seem like a master would not sound great on the PI.
Just wondering what you might think they’re doing in that amp.

Posted this in trainwreck files by accident.
Thanks.

Re: Standel artist toward a DG 30
Hi Michael,
Yeah, I agree, Grissom, his fingers, and his signature amp (and guitar!) make for quite a sound. He's one of my favorite guitar players. Very honky with a fat but tight low end. Some of that direct honk is the pickups as well. The amp is cathode biased with a decent amount of screen compression. David talks about wanting the feel of tube rectification, without getting too squishy and lost in a band mix. The output section is very JTM45 (0.1uF/220k) and the PI is more Liverpool. GZ34 rectifier and a choke in the power supply. High Cut, yes, and a presence circuit with feedback to the PI. Pre-phase inverter master. Not sure about the preamp but Plexi-ish.
Hope that helps.

Re: Standel artist toward a DG 30
That helps Colossal. The Standel has a voltage doubler power supply. it runs up at 385 v with screens down at 300v to run the tubes colder. I have a hammock 270 transformer for tube rectifier. That would lower voltage down in the 320 v range.
It’s a summer project. Will see where it goes.
