Re: Pentode / Triode switch
Why?
These amps where made to be power houses so if you want to change that your starting out with the wrong amp in the first place!
To me such a mod is like taking a 120k Lamborghini and neutering it down into a moped!

When I die, I want to go like my Grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming like the passengers in his car!
Cutting out a man's tongue does not mean he’s a liar, but it does show that you fear the truth he might speak about you!

Re: Pentode / Triode switch
Sell it to someone who wants it as is and get yourself a lesser wattage amp, or build yourself one, or get a load attenuator box, or build a load attenuator box.
Another way to go since that chassis has so much real estate would be to put in a London power power scaling kit.
With one of these you can get the amp down to all of 5 watts if you care to and are fully reversible.
99% of players who convert a Pentode output stage to Triode don’t like it.

Never mind, found them
Re: Pentode / Triode switch
Agree- I have a Juke amp, 2 power tubes (usually 6L6 or El34) with a built in pentode/triode switch. It Functions well electrically- the builder, Gary Crocteau in New Hampshire really knows his stuff- but the lower power setting (triode) just sounds like a weaker version. In other words, 6L6 on triode doesn't really sound like a cranked 6V6 amp. You can pretty much get the same tone with a low gain tube screamer, & much easier lol!
Also, not sure how robust current tubes are if you toggle that switch a lot while playing...
Re: Pentode / Triode switch
You'd likely need bigger (than 25w) resistors for the Robinette solution, and/or they'd need to have access to plenty of cooling air.
Note that I've done something similar (have resistors soak up 75% of the output power), and it's not really that much quieter.
I agree with the 99%, I put a triode switch in one build and never did it again.

Re: Pentode / Triode switch
For sure, you will have to determine the right balance of attenuation and heat dissipation. The better passive reactive loads, I believe, leverage multiple "Arcol" style resistors and inductors.
Though, I think the OP was looking for a low part-count solution to "reduce power". What about a RichMod PPIMV (at its core is a dual-gang pot and and some coax)? That likely will sound overall more pleasing than the P/T switch.
