My First Build, now with Added Woodwork!

Post by CraigGa »

I originally posted about my first build based on the Benson Monarch thread a while back,

https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 61#p432761

Since then it's had a few tweaks, I've added a speaker attenuator and with the help of a friend and his shed made a cabinet for it.

Because it was always intended as a "lounge amp" my wife made a lot of the aesthetic choices to fit in with its intended surroundings.

P.S The speaker is straight, it's the label that's wonky :)

It's a very tidy build and nice work on the cab! I'll bet it feels really good to get to this point. Now for the bad news. It could take years or decades to get the monkey off your back. Amp building is addictive.

I have one small comment. I think I see two large black resistors and one large white sandblock resistor strapped with zip ties. I've got some concerns about the potential for excessive heat build up. I'd keep an eye on that or maybe do a pre-emptive rework of it to give a bit of air between the parts. It may be more than enough to just place some spacers between the parts and then zip tie them again. Something like nylon bushings cut in half would probably do the job very well.

Congratulations. Well done!

Thanks Phil I'll bear that in mind.
I used clear tie-wraps as opposed to black assuming that they would discolour if anything got too hot but it wouldn't be too difficult to give them more air just in case.

Thanks xtian,
it's probably the 40+ years installing telecoms infrastructure showing there!
