pentode/triode switch for dlite clone

thinking of trying one. anyone done it and what did you think, worth it? i play at pretty low volume so i thought it might help a little, its hard to get the power tubes working and still keep the volume low enough.

I've personally never thought running a pentode in pseudo-triode mode was worth it in any amp I've tried. It's not going to cut the power output enough to reduce the volume any significant amount, and power tube distortion really isn't a part of the D-sound at all. If you're looking to change the power section in your Dlite, the first thing I would recommend is actually going over to 6L6s. They will make the amp sound smoother even at low volumes.

you could also have a switch to switch in another dropping resistor feeding the PI. Lower PI voltage = less output.

FWIW, I accidentally discovered another method to drop power output.

I used a 91K ohm resistor in place of the 1 ohm bias test point resistor...oops.

The tone was about the same but much quieter...I don't recommend doing that, but maybe you can use the info to develop a safe method...

I put one in my Express build & find it usable in that amp. However it also browns the sound out a bit which might not be good in a Dumble.

I used a 91K ohm resistor in place of the 1 ohm bias test point resistor...oops.

The tone was about the same but much quieter...I don't recommend doing that, but maybe you can use the info to develop a safe method...

That's called Cathode Bias

i've given up on attenuators, everything i've tryed make the amp sound lifeless to me. i've done the KOC power scaling, weber mass, Lpad and demoed a powerbrake. i've built a firefly, about 1watt(pretty good little amp), moonlite, 2watt PP(never could make it sound good) and made an adaptor to use a 6sn7 in a Univalve (worked pretty damn good). the dlite does pretty good low volume, its just on the edge, a little louder always sounds better-then it's too loud. i'm not complaining, i love this amp. the thought had crossed my mind of making up some adaptors to try a pair of 6sn7's in this amp.
