Very Small Special

Post by dorrisant »

I couldn't remember if I had posted this or not... Maybe on FB.

Anyway... Hammond AO-44 iron, 2x ECL86 cathode biased, 1x 12AX7, 1x EZ81.

The customer (and good friend) wanted something odd and old to carry to gigs and make people wonder "what's in the box?" This does the trick.

1/8" plate fits where the tray (?) used to be. Made a CNC error around one of the power tubes and used brass plate to cover it... but I will never tell.

The "7" is filled with fluorescent red paint and glows under blacklight. The pinstripe around the main plate is actually an excerpt from the actual script, the part where the delivery guy has delivered the box.

Two piece back plate for IEC, output and input jacks to facilitate amp removal. Most all of the stickers, graphics, etc. were all approved by the customer and he is elated with it.

As far as sound, it is pretty well a Dumble preamp, so you shouldn't be surprised when I tell you that it is incredible. I thought it would be like an ODS without the OD, but man was I wrong. It has a lot more bite and harmonic goodness that I wouldn't have realized without trying to build this thing. If you were ever on the fence about maybe building one, the just do it. Well worth it.

If anyone needs a board for one of these, just let me know.

As usual your turd polishing gets another level up ! :D. looks outstanding, well done. I've never messed up and had to cover errors with metal plates.... this month.

Love this. I have an old tool box I made in metal shop class in Grade 8 ( when they actually let you use real tools and machinery, unlike today) and it looks like yours now.
Now I know what to do with it.
Congrats!
