Just getting back online, we had 3 ice storms in a row in Portland and have been without power for 3 days now. Camped out at a friend's whom we trust has been quarantining religiously. Our bedroom was 46 degrees this morning, yikes...
I hear it's colder in Texas now than in Anchorage Alaska? WTF? My Sister lives in San Antonio and it's headed to 12 degrees overnight and many are still without power..God Bless them!!

Stay Safe!

Thanks, we are getting back to normal now. Nothing puts fussing over amp componentry in perspective like spending every minute for days struggling just to stay warm. Har... but now happily I can go back to fretting about this stuff. Played the 50w today after 5 days away and it was just a lovely experience.

So I was curious as to what the effect of adding an HRM board to the ODS 50 might be so built one and jumpered into the circuit after V2b. I bypassed the V2b coupling cap and tied back in just before the (entrance?) resistor for the Level pot. Its working, I have tone control for the OD channel, but I notice there is a significant loss of gain, I have to take the level pot all the way up to match the clean volume. I suppose this is to be expected, but can anyone clue me in on what the best way is to replace the gain? I presume that HRM's don't have this problem with out of balance clean/OD channels...

Edit: After thinking about this for awhile, it occurs to me that this is possibly the reason for the separate channel volume controls in the HRM models. Is that how the problem is solved?

Photo attached, TIA for any feedback.

Yes :D
HRM's Have what is called a "Clean master" it also has a different OD entrance (low gain network) 250K Drive and 1M OD Master..Study a Bluesmaster or standard HRM switching layout/schematic should be obvious.

Tony,
Yeah, already had looked at the schematic for the HRM, just didn't connect the dots as to why the separate volume controls were there. Thanks for the clarification, however... Cheers

Wow Phil, when I ran across this thread I thought that was my amp for a sec :D :) :D. When I first built mine I couldn’t believe how bright it was but I also had 2 new g12-65 speakers that I had to break in and really no burn in time on the amp. I put the speakers on a varic looped the amp for about 40 hrs and through dumb luck plugged a HOF reverb pedal into the fx loop and the sound now is unreal. Creamy gain from low to high volume with single coil or humbucker pickups. I now understand the hype surrounding these amps.

I have the 250k/250pf network on the fx loop and I had a classictone OT which I swapped for a hammond.

Yeah, I discovered first hand the fact that break-in is a factor. However, I also made many component swaps according to advice given directly to me and also other things gleaned from reading a lot of posts. So its a bit hard to tell exactly how much of the improvement in tone was from mods and how much from break-in. I'm happy with the results, the OD is still not 100% where I'd like it but I consider it a work in progress. I'm finally getting an output transformer from Mojo to swap for the Ceriatone OT, they've been out of stock for awhile, we will see what effect that has. I am finding that with amp building, like guitar building, everything matters.

Cheers,

I agree!!!! I was going to use the mojotone OT but like you said they were out of stock so I opted for the Hammond. I’m in the process now of gathering parts for a 183 build except this time I’m going to play around with parts/components to see what/where the tonal affects are.
