Oscilloscopes and grounding

Post by ViperDoc »

I'm about to take delivery of my first oscilloscope, I'm looking forward to knowing more about my builds. I wanted to ask if there is reason behind ground-lifting the scope itself to avoid arcing from chassis voltage. Is this "current wisdom" (see what I did there?), or is it fine to rely on the oscilloscope's fuse/keep the scope grounded to the wall?

Thanks.

Back in the days when TVs had the chassis connected to one phase, it was a common problem for us with IT power networks. With IT there's no neutral.... If you then had a scope with line ground connected to scope chassis...... Boom....
A lot of modern scopes have separate ground and chassis earth, - but no all. Check, or even measure, what your scope has, - and handle it correspondingly. Most scopes also have a chassis gound connection at the front. Just measure the resistance between this point and power ground.....

Thanks for the tip, Aurora. This is the scope I picked up: a Siglent SDS1104X-E 100MHz. Should be more than what I need.

I've seen people using their phone as a signal generator. That's likely the last thing I'd want to do. Any good, efficient signal generators you guys like?
