Kay 704 II info

Post by Stevem »

As a aid to those of you who ever need to repair a 1966 Kay 704 gen II and not pull your hair out for ten minutes like I did last night please note that the whole power supply is negative, lol!

I don't always consult a schematic right from the start, do you?

The first thing I do is look for a schematic.

without a doubt i look for a schematic before doing anything else. I'm not experienced enough to be able to look at something that isn't working right and trace it. schematic gives me a roadmap of where to take voltage measurements to make sure I've got juice, where to scope to troubleshoot signal issues, etc

that being said having this thread and a link to the schematic in the google results will no doubt help the next guy looking at one thinking "huh?!"

Sorry, but I am age 66 and have been repairing tube and SS electronics starting off at a TV repair shop when I was 16,so no I other then back in the day when trouble shooting a color TV 90% of the repairs I have done have been with out the need of a schematic other then confirming component values when something burns up!

I'm just a hobbyist. When I read your post my curiosity was peaked. Since this is predominately a tube discussion and I have never seen a tube amp with only negative voltages, naturally I had to look at a schematic to understand what you were saying, and more importantly, what you were not telling us. If you had mentioned PNP there would have been no puzzle and I would have simply turned the page.
