Tube Phono Preamp Suggestions?

Post by dorrisant »

Can anyone suggest a phono preamp (RIAA) that I could put together here at home. I have some sweet Mullard, Amperex and Telefunken 12AX7s, so I'd like to incorporate those if I can... not married to that though.

To be honest, I'd be interested in more than just the phono input too... but I think I'd keep this first one simple and phono only (for momma's rig).

If any one you know has the RC-30 RCA tube book from 73 that you can get your Mitts on,they have great example circuits to build by in the rear of the book.

Antique electronics sells a reprint of the book and everyone who's into repairs and especially building should have a copy for reference if you ask me!

Would the one from '75 work?

I see a ton of schematics at the end of the book?

Thanks guys!!

I do have a copy, out on loan though. Phil's link is gold though.

Page 702 of the book shows the phono preamp, (703 of the pdf).

Page 706 (707 - pdf) of the book show the tone stack amplifier to go with it.

Best advice: duplicate the Dynaco PAS-2.

I built one of these many moons ago (with mods from the Audio Amateur, mainly a regulated power supply) and it sounded great. Now, I'd use a variation on the modern regulated supply that R.G. came up with:

Back in my "tubes are the new thing" phase, I bought a couple of these for cheap. I rebuilt one of them and put it into use. The change in sound over the integrated amp I was pretty remarkable. They can be really good. I probably ought to dig those out of storage and have another pass at them.

Um... Ida know... It's been a long time. Could be PAS 3. Could be the Pas 2.732...

Now I really have to go dig them out to see.

Seems like I acquired a little stereo 20W/channel Dynaco power amp too. That might be fun.

If you want to use your 12ax7, I'd suggest Eli Duttman's revision of the old RCA phono preamp:

Otherwise the old tnt's Indiscreet that is full SS:

Or, to excess, the RIAA Aikido preamp from John Broskie @ https://tubecad.com/2009/02/blog0159.htm
