No Phil, I was talking about electrolytics vs. film caps. I use all film or foil, mainly Solen or Obbligato, but some others such as these from AVX.

Gotcha, that is pretty much what I'm looking to do too, cool ;)

Thanks for clarifying.

You want >durable< filter caps? Go to a HVAC supply place and get some motor run caps, taking int account that the voltage specified is AC rms, and the DC voltage rating would (probably) be 1.414 times the AC rating. These things are designed to carry lots of current and live a long time in hot surroundings while doing it. The down side is that they're big, and heavy - like all heavy duty things. But they are relatively cheap for the rating.

Film caps for power filtering - a critical part of the Immortal Amplifier!

I've used them in past builds. They were steel cans 5" tall and 2" in diameter, rated at 440VAC used in Xray machines. AVX made them in an oval configuration also.

I'm all in on film over electrolytics whenever feasible. The need for high voltage, high capacitance film caps in IGBT power modules has created a competitive market for power film capacitors. It's a very nice development for all of us, because it just so happens that the values and voltages fall work for our needs as well. Over the last 5-6 years or so, I've seen the cost and size come down quite a bit.
I'm using these for a reactive load
