Hope all are well ~ Assuming the iron is good, does this 40's amp schematic look like anything promising? Can one tell simply by this? I have yet to see or hear of 6C8G's, & the 5Y4 is new to me.
Tnx

Re: Possible Project?
should be fine just replace the odd preamp/inverter tubes with 12ax7
5y4g appears to be functionally the same as 5y3

Re: Possible Project?
Of course replacing the dual triodes in an 8 pin setup will possibly require tweaking the parameters a bit and obviously replacing the 8 pin sockets with 9 pins... It might also work with some minor component changes and keeping the 8 pin sockets and dual triodes like 6SN7's that are still pretty commonly available (still a different pinout so that also would require tweaking).
Tons of options...

Yeah, I hear you all,,, I'm leaning towards keeping the 8 pin 6C8G's, and just having some component value changes... Tons of options, but perhaps only a few that will make this thing rock!! I want a low volume beast, if it's at all possible, given what it's got,,,?? First, I give it to my tech to make sure it's stable before I instruct him to beef it up. Only problem is that he's not a musician, & I'm not a technician, which is why I love & depend on the great advice from everybody.... thnx

Re: Possible Project?
I'd much rather use tubes i could easily replace walking into any music shop
same reason you see a lot of touring artists using boss pedals rather than fancy boutique: easily replaceable in an emergency

Re: Possible Project?
Thanks,,, These tubes are ready available,,,,I get it. It's looks a decent, simple project that, with the help you all & my tech, I could get some hands on some tweaking experience..... ya think? I understand all voltage precautions!!
Re: Possible Project?
Assuming you have the amp in your possession and would rather stick with octal preamp tubes, I think I'd go for 6SL7's. These are going to be close enough to 6C8-G. You'll probably need to rewire the tube sockets -- I didn't look at that. The clear advantage is that 6SL7 can be found as a current production tube and they don't cost very much. You can also find used ANOS or NOS for decent prices. If you can get 6C8's that's fine, but I'd get extras.
Really, though, it is not such a big deal to change the sockets. They make adapter plates so that you can properly fit a noval socket where the chassis was drilled for octal. Doing this will allow you to use a conventional guitar amp circuit for your project. In the end, the cost of a few adapter plates is not significant.

5Y4 is the same as a 5Y3 with a different pinout, so be sure to check that if you're going to use the more common 5Y3.

It all makes a lot of sense~ I'll be sure to report back!!
Thanks again, & be well~
