Ojai vs #102?

Post by dan46n2 »

Does anyone know if the Bludo Ojai is a direct clone of the #102 or does it have any extra circuits, HRM? Its the sound I'm going for and seems like it has more gain and grit to it that some of the other #102 clones I've heard. Also I'm sure I missed it but cant find a BOM of #102, I know it must be here somewhere. Could someone please post a link if there is one?

if you want a more gainy #102 type amp get a #183 or a bluesmaster

Also remember that there is an internal OD trimmer pot and that people set this about 1/4 up as per Robben Fords original#102 . You can dial more gain if you want to.

HRM is a separate tonestack for the OD channel.

Yes the Ojai is Brandons version of a 102, and the 102 layout in the files section is basically an Ojai. Brandon has been inside both Carltons Ripper and Robbens amp at the same time AFAIK. As far as the gain thing goes? 102 IMO, has plenty of gain on tap..The main difference between 183 and 102 is 183 has a more aggressive tone (Due to it's parts selection) hotter PI, no NFB on V1b along with the EL-34's which might break-up a little sooner. This gives 183 a more raw type sound better suited for Rock

IMO it becomes a style choice. An amp that has a smoother more compressed and transparent OD tone,102 vs the more aggressive OD from 183 which has a more Marshall-ish type vide to it.
Both amps imo have plenty of gain if you need it..

BTW..For those high gain players that only use a "High Gain" sound.Dumble's High gain mod is KILLER for this. It's like a Phat sounding JCM 800. If you want a high gain monster without the clean channel that's a good one too. IMO!!
In an HRM type format The Bluesmaster is a good one, versatile aggressive OD w/Mega-boost and a really lively clean channel.
Choose wisely my son

Hey Marcus
Sure! Dumbles high gain mod is an actual mod Dumble did. There is an amp (A Bassman I believe) someone posted a long time ago where several at the Garage figured it out and did a schematic on it. Several well known builders here did the mod and recommended it highly so I did quick prototype and it turned out perfect I didn't need to tweak a thing. I think the high gain section was used along with or possibly part of the Ultraphonics mods. One side of a Blackface Fender would be a High Plate Skyliner or Classic/Whatever and the 2nd channel being the high gain mod etc.
BTW. I always thought a great amp would be a Bluesmaster clean/Marshall style PI on one channel and a High gain mod on the other.Put a channel switcher at the front end and have yourself a very cool amp with independent channels 8)
Here it is..

Hey Phil?
You should post it in the files section for easy reference since it was an actual Dumble mod and a great one at that.

Totally makes sense, and DONE!

Thanks Tony! Your knowledge is astounding and super helpful. Sounds almost like something I might have to try, I've been debating making a bluesbreaker style combo, having it switchable with that idea sounds really cool.

Thanks for moving that Phil and always glad to help out with an idea or an opinion and that would be a cool amp fer sure
BTW.I would label the post Dumble's "High Gain Mod" and do a quick write up on it so everyone knows what it is, does, and sounds like If you want me to do that I can.(maybe recommend some parts for it). It's a cool amp and deserves a spotlight..

You're probably more qualified to do that than I am :). maybe a new thread in the files section detailing it and then linking to it? Or just the schematic and other details on that thread?

Cool be glad too! Yeah just a quick down and dirty write up with the schematic and pictures of the drip-edge conversion in its own post (Like 102 or 124 layouts)..Will work on it later tonight and send it via PM and you can add change anything you want and publish it
BTW Looking over the schematic posted it is missing a few things so I will update it and add voltages and parts types

Thats the regular search box. Top right , on a mobile, has a magnifier symbol. When you press that, it give you different search options and one of the is the "google search this site".
