What is representative of you, your music, or interests? Surely your amps are at least one nicer than Two Rock....how about Three Rock?norburybrook wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 9:29 pm yes, I've been thinking the same thing. It's missing a logo. I've a few amps/speakers would benefit from one. what though? a plate, a two rock style lettering?

Norbury Brook sounds picturesque... unless it's the town's drainage...

That snake skin pattern is beautiful! Almost looks like real snakeskin. I will have to try that one day.
Congrats Marcus!

Re: Matchless/Bad cat build thread
thanks everyone.
THe colour scheme was dictated by what Tolex I had left over. This whole amps has been a leftovers project. It started with the chassis which was a Dumble chassis give to me by a friend a year or so ago. I had an old Marshall 50w OT that was a laydown type that had been in a box for 4 years...who uses laydown OT's? Anyway i mounted it standing up with a bracket. I had the tubes. I had leftover plywood for the cab and had leftover tolex/piping from builds so it was nice to use it all up.
I've found an ebay seller doing acrylic lettering so have ordered a white 'Norbury Brook' set of letters. lets see how it looks when it gets here in a week.
TBC.....

How do you like the amp? Are you enthusiastic about the tone? Looking forward to another sound clips from you which I always enjoy!
I think your cab head looks fabulous!
With respect, 10thtx

Re: Matchless/Bad cat build thread
Jeff,
I'm getting into it. I think all good quality tube amps sound good, the main designs are tried and tested and if yo use good components and make good solder joints you'll have a good sounding amp.
The clean is very nice, considering the signal goes straight from V1a to the PI it's really well balanced, I suppose that short signal path with no tone stack gives you real clarity.
The gain channel can be fierce
Again, it's very focused and tight.
The tube /SS recto is nice, there's about 20vDC between the 2 and along with the extra 100uF filtering on the SS side makes for a subtle but discernible feel to the amp.
I'll post some sound clips as and when.
as i said above I've ordered an Acrylic logo to finish her off.
I don't know what it was that finally pushed me to do this amp, as I was going to go with one of those 2 builds you did, perhaps I htought this one would be 'more' different as I have too many amps and being different meant it could have a home.

What's the HT voltage (ie at the OT CT) between them when the amp is cranking out a high power signal? It's at high current draws that the reduction in sag provided by solid state rectification tends to make its presence feltnorburybrook wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 5:04 pm...The tube /SS recto is nice, there's about 20vDC between the 2 and along with the extra 100uF filtering on the SS side makes for a subtle but discernible feel to the amp...

I bet you'll get it sounding like you want and it'll be a great amp for you!
Look forward to your sound clips! Thanks, Jeff

yes that's the classic scenario for tube /SS rectifier differencepdf64 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 5:33 pmWhat's the HT voltage (ie at the OT CT) between them when the amp is cranking out a high power signal? Re: Matchless/Bad cat build thread
Jeff, the more amps I build/own the more I realise this . It's still fun though tone chasing and building so that's OK with me.
I really do think this will be my last build though for myself anyway. It's been a great journey and I've met some great folk here on this forum
today I removed the EVM 12 speaker from my Dumble 1x12 cab and installed a vintage Celestion V30 , it works really well with this amp so it's staying in there. Need to be slightly careful as it's only a 60w speaker.

Oh no ya don't, Marcus. You're not getting out of here that easy. Nobody leaves the AmpGarage or the Hotel California. You have a Steel String Singer to consider...norburybrook wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 10:05 pm I really do think this will be my last build though for myself anyway. Seconded. Everybody learns from these adventures, and having the product tested in a professional studio environment is hugely valuable.

He's said as much in the past, more than once. You'll be back Marcus --- there are a few more amps in the cannon still to build.martin manning wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 2:38 pm Seconded.
