Direct Coupling Question

Post by stephenl »

I was looking at Merlin's direct coupled example in his book and would like to try it out in my mule chassis. The B+ would be 250v instead of 350v in this example.

Initially I just thought that everything would scale down with the voltage. After playing around with the load lines I'm second guessing that but maybe just having a brain cramp.

My understanding is that direct coupling is a little finicky with gain stages.

So, question is, can I just use the circuit as Merlin has proposed at 250v or do I need to adjust?

It really depends on what you want to get:
- will it sound the same? No.
- will it run without issues? Yes.

Thanks Roberto.
I was planning on trying it at the input stage, so the lower headroom won't be an issue. And yes, I realize the tone will be different at different B+ - but I don't know what it sounds like at either voltage yet, so it'll need some experimentation.
I was more or less just asking if it will work ok functionally.

Yes, it will work. Tubes are very adaptive.
