Joe Bonamassa's 2x Dumble recording rig

Post by norburybrook »

Here's a picture of Joe Bonamassa's recording rig at the moment.

not seen grill cloth like the gold script one before.

both combo's. Interesting mic-ing.....45 deg angle sm57 and what looks like a Beyer M160 ribbon.

Interesting Marcus, thanks very much for this picture!

Looks like rock mode and mid boost on the gold script, bright off. Presence barely open. En pretty flat but mids a bit open. And they were turned up pretty loud it seems.

You know what kind of ODS the gold script is? HRM? Grill cloth looks replaced to me, but maybe HAD ever used this salt and pepper Marshall style cloth? Never seen that...

Rootz, i know live he uses 2 ODS combo's with two tweed twins. He has Classic lead 80 speakers in all of them(well he uses Celestion JB speakers but they're classic lead 80's). He also uses the ODS amps in Jazz mode and permanent OD too. They blend well and work nicely together like this.

My friend Alan uses an ODS with an Express and uses the ODS in permanent OD mode as well, again it blends well with the express like this as they both clean up on the guitar volume.

About a year ago we did an outdoor festival in Leesburg VA
The rig was My SSS , The 102 and an Express (I built). The Express stayed on the whole time and switched back and forth between the SSS and the OD in my 102.
3 2X12 D-style Cabs JBL D-120 (orange frames) for the SSS, 65's for the 102 and V30's for the Express.
It was GREAT!!!

BTW. A long time ago (2005) Joe tried out one of my amps. It was an HRM 100 watter. When I asked if he wanted to try the OD side of the amp he said not really give me a clean tone and I'll use the pedals so he never even got to hear the HRM side. Pretty funny!

Tony, that sounds like a killer rig :D Interesting that the express stayed on all the time, my friend Alan has become a huge fan of the express over the last year or so and loves it with his ODS. Do you still use yours?

No, I sold it to Kevin Post who plays with Blake Sheldon about a year now. It was a wonderful amp but it just wasn't for me. If I were to do another one it would be a Liverpool :D But I need another amp like I need a hole in my head  A Friend of mine I've known for many years has 2 original wrecks and was good friends with Ken. He turned me on to them a long time ago before the Wreck explosion happened. The cool thing about them is the volume control aspect but honestly, buy the time I set it to where the amp started to break up nicely they were just too loud for the gigs I was doing in smaller clubs. I could have used it in the '80s when you could play as loud as you wanted but at that time I had a KILLER sounding JCM 800 I modded. If I were Joe Bonamassa I would build another one just to have it around and maybe use it on occasion.
BTW. The Wreck on was just to give me some stage splash and both SSS and 102 had the Mic's

Tony,

My version of the express I've ended up with actually is pretty usable. The split plate switch (fast, gradual) knocks it back nicely and the type 4 master volume works really well. I also add a vox type cut control too. All that combines to make an amp that will balance nicely with an ODS.

But as you say you need another amp like a hole in the head.....oh man...I'm about to build one of steve's low wattage AC15/marshall 18w amps, thought it would make a good studio amp or small gigs, I'm also tempted to experiment with some sort of 2x10 cab too. I'm running out of space though!!
