Went back to the El34's. The new EHX EL34 are really good tubes.

Update on the Speaker:

After a week or so of this Celestion BN12 Ive come to conclusion that on clean its great but there's just something I don't quite like on OD. The top end is a bit fizzy and I've been AB-ing against my Alnico cream and I much prefer that. The Alnico is NOT the NEO version but the standard and although not as light as the neo its still a fairly light speaker.

Not sure if the Celestion will break in or if that's the sound of the neo speakers. I know Russ mentioned about this and I'm now hearing what I think the 'rock' guys were hearing with the OD fizz on top of the note.

The journey continues.

Have you ever tried the Neo Creamback Marcus? I have one, but not using it as we speak.

By the way, did you get your transformers from Savino again for this build?

What you have there is commonly referred to as Neo-itis (harsh overtones)Again a decent speaker for clean guitar/bass/Steel/PA use. I hate em in an ODS

What were your findings with respect to the Neo Creamback Tony? Tried that one too? I have one, but start to wonder what I'd gain with a ET65 or something along those lines.

@rootz

I've not used the neo cream back but I use the alnico cream a lot, it's one of my favourite speakers. It's not heavy anyway so saving a 1lb for the neo version doesn't seem worth it.

I've PM'd you details of InMadOut transformers I used in the last build.

Savino makes great transformers.

Update:

the tweaking continues. I'm now with a low plate V1 and I think I prefer it, this reminds me of my last combo where I tried various hybrids and ended up back to a full spec Bluesmaster.

Anyway, today's question:

is there an easy way to make my loop a parallel one as I've decided that blending a small amount of 100% wet signal with an unadulterated dry signal is preferable tone wise?

I have a hole for a switch if it's possible to make it switchable but if not I think as I only use verb and delay a permanent parallel loop would be better anyway.

would there be any downsides to this in an amp like mine where the dumbleator is always in circuit?

TIA

Back on page 2 there was some discussion of ser-par loop arrangements. Clauss' pinched MESA Boogie solution would be an easy one to try, and to switch out. A pull-switch pot would put both mix control and defeat in one hole. Link goes here: https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21205

so I'd replace the 250k return pot with a 25k mix pot and add a 250k resistor in it's place?

No, the wiper of the 25k mix pot feeds the return pot.

Ah yes, I can see now on the schematic. I don't know if I've got room for another pot :D

Sorry, your return jack goes straight into the recover stage, yes? That would make it pretty much like Clauss' drawing, where the return pot is after the recover stage.

well as Id put the v1 to low plate i thought i might as well go ahead and do a full #124 now.

So I've swapped everything out which was an awful job , a lot easier building from scratch!

so for OD I have a 220k into a 100k trimmer pot for the OD instead of the 350k and I've got 250K drive pot and a 250k OD master. This is different from the 100k level pot on the #124 which is like the #102 a balance pot. I wired it like this because of the loop/relays and wasn't sure if the balance pot would mess things up with the loop and also how to wire the realy if i did change it.

Unfortunately somewhere in doing this the OD is now shot. Clean is fine, the voltages on the v2 are all good not sure whats happened, should the OD work with the way i have it wired? basically its the same as #183 really?

all i have is a weak signal and lots of white noise....one step forward ....5 back today.

Ugh, Marcus...sorry to hear about your troubles. I've been there with dodgy OD before. Check that your shielded cable runs have not been damaged, e.g. broken lead, damaged ground, or shield touching the conductor. Maybe a broken lead somewhere else?

thanks Dave, nothing on the pot ends is bad, they were the easiest part of the transformation. The hard part was the V1 cathode/resistors/ground and OD entrance which required removing everything and replacing. I've a feeling that's perhaps where the issues lie if the basic topology I've taken is sound...i.e #183 OD entrance and master volumes. Adding snubbers to a fully loaded V2 (surrounded by a the loop components)was a real PIA too, I'm sure though that even if they're not quite right it wouldn't affect the sound in the way i have at the moment.

I'm back out on the road tomorrow so wont have any time over the next few days to check this, it's hard going from a fully working amp to a non working one :D
