Thanks Stelligan and Colossal. It was a while since I had an ODS in the house and I realised how much I missed their hot overdrive tones!

Cheers

  • 10M>10M>0.05u>10M>10M NFB in the second gain stage (doesn't exist on 183)

bright cap on Master Volume (none on 183)

250p anode-cathode snubbers on both stages of OD (25p on 183)

0.1uF PI to power tubes coupling caps (0.05 in 183)

    lower filtering overall
I went through this same exercise a while back. All of the things you have listed can be tried out by "clipping in" componets. No soldering required. That's what I did. Clipping in and out allows you to do quick A/B tests for a better comparison. Just know that the clipping wires that you use can pickup some noise so you have to disregard that and know that this extra noise won't be there if you solder the new components properly.

For the record, there are some OTHER differences between 102 and 183. In the OD section, 102 has different Drive and Volume pot values and also different resister values that precede these pots. These pots and resisters make up substantially different voltage dividers between the two circuits and will have a major affect on the overdrive sound.

Guy,

I am getting ready to ship that 102 head out. It sounds great. I have the OD entrance trimmer set to probably 12 or 15k, I think. A little lower. As it is, 3 1/2 on Drive and Volume and when you click the OD toggle there is no jump in hiss or anything to indicate OD. The amp just gets thicker and juicier. If you lay into with your right hand, it will bark. Really great sound and very musical, for lack of a better adjective. Turn the Drive up to 6 and it will distort.
