1N4003 - Why?
Greetings!
Is there any plausible explaination for that? Will the VCT work better with this instead of an 1N4007? This would be the only reasont to stash two different diodes.
Cheers
Gerhard

I always use a 4007 so I don't think it makes much difference.

1N4007 is good for 1000v. 1N4003 is good for 200v. 1N4001 is good for 50v. Any of these will work just fine in that circuit. There was a time when a 1000v diode cost considerably more than a 200v diode. Not so today though.

Have any of you gone overspec? I have a BY448 (1650V - 4A) on a SSS style amp...overkill I know

over-spec for the pilot light, or for the rectification?Bombacaototal wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 10:57 am Have any of you gone overspec? I have a BY448 (1650V - 4A) on a SSS style amp...overkill I know
I did once on the rectifier board after reading that Jelle said some certain HUGE diodes changed the sound, they didn't, well not that I could notice. I've still got a couple of them, the leads are about 3mm thick, you can barely get 2 into a standard eyelet.

I often have issues with the leads of vintage components and eyelets as far as being able to fit everything in, in specific spots which have a few more connections

yes, usually the cathode caps/resistors centre ground point on ODS amps

In the actual drawing, that diode is only to protect the LED from reverse voltage it cannot handle by itself... At 10-15 mA for a LED any diode can be used, - also 4007....

Re: 1N4003 - Why?
I thought perhaps the led might flicker on the AC heater line and the diode maybe reduced that ? I actually have a build with an unused 5v winding I planned to use for the led power light...I’ll check

Most common LEDs have a PIV rating of only 5V
