PAB "lite" & revised

Post by 10thTx »

My amp is not a Dumble clone. So, this idea may not work for others? However, I thought I would share it in the spirit of trying to "give back" some help. Perhaps the idea will be useful to someone?

I've built a number of D-inspired amps with PAB and then found myself almost never using it. The reason I didn't use it is because it typically had too much of a volume boost and it seemed
to add too much treble, grit and harshness to the overdrive.

So, I've wanted something that would tonally be more akin to something like a Timmy boost set reasonably clean. Something that preserved the "original" tone but did boost the volume
and gave it a slight push to sustain more. The tone hardly changes at all based on how I typically have treble, bass and mid set.

This is my solution that works well for my amp. I might add that compared to the original PAB (which I tried first), it has VERY little increase in floor noise even though it has a significant increase in volume.

The amp is a D-763 which borrowed some ideas from Dumble and inserted them into a "sort of" AB763 topology but that is cathode biased. Reverb but no tremolo. I'd be happy to share the schematic IF anyone is interested in my posting it?

Just put a 1M trimmer between PAB and ground. Then you’ve got an adjustable boost. :)

Here's the entire schematic. This is the first time I've really gotten along well with a preamp boost. This preserves the tone I want and removes the harshness.
