Re: Somewhere between 102 and 183
AFAIK mica caps don't have the distortion characteristics seen in some ceramic types. I was more about replacing mica with something more available and cheaper.

Great. My advice (take it or leave it) would be to try some different brands of ceramics to see if the distortion characteristics are the same throughout or if they differ brand to brand (they did for me)and compare them with the micas and see if you can hear a difference (I did). if not then check your hearingmartin manning wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2019 2:07 pm AFAIK mica caps don't have the distortion characteristics seen in some ceramic types. Re: Somewhere between 102 and 183
I think we're still talking past each other. C0G ceramic is a good substitute for mica if one is after low distortion and good temperature stability (virtually ideal behavior), and it has the advantage of being more reliable, available, and cheaper. I'm talking about the case where ceramic cap distortion is NOT wanted.

I Know what you are saying about the specs and the price with the COG's
You know It really doesn't matter what I think! when it comes to what you put in your amp. If low distortion and good temperature stability (virtually ideal behavior), and it has the advantage of being more reliable, available, and cheaper is what your after. Great!
Good Luck

That Matt Rae clip sounds more like how I remember playing 183, and my Alexander Dumble modded Marshall also has that vibe. Its livelier, and at low volumes, it gets fuzzy on the lows with high gain settings. But when that lead note goes....it goes!

The High Gain mod is a cool mod no doubt and in some ways, I like it a bit better than the OD side of an Overdrive Special for the really high gain stuff and 10 years ago would have used that tone

The tone I am shooting for is more like the lead tone Robben gets on the solo on "That Road" where it snarls at you (but not fuzzy) on the low notes and double stops. I can get that sound on my 102 ( on a good day)with the humbuckers but since I am not really a bucker player here lately want to get a little of that with my single coil guitars. Hence the somewhat in-between sound I am chasing. I think I got close
 Solo starts 3:30 in.

Ha, classic Robben Ford
I think a lot of that is bridge humbucker though tony in conjunction with the amp of course. Have you tried a little '59 seymour Duncan in the bridge of a tele or strat? I think that get's you 95% there of a 'proper' humbucker and they're a straight drop in and can be split too. I've a tele with Humbuckers I use for this but I'm thinking of getting another '59 as I sold my tele with it in and to be honest after going round the houses for a couple of years with boutique pickups etc I think I may return full circle

just a thought an my 2 cents
 YMMV
YMMVp.s. I've got two really rough bootlegs of Robbern with the yellow jackets, crap recordings but you can hear him just killing it.
Shall I Post them on a new thread?

I get what your saying and thought about another pickup and the 59 is a great pickup. My 339 has an old JB in the bridge that's coil tapped that comes pretty close to the "That Road" sound on the Music Man.
For most things I like the sound of a low output single coil for clarity and a little twang especially for the clean work! apart from that if I have to buy and install another pickup in one of my guitars again I am going to shoot myself
I have drawers of used pickups and a yes actually have a pickup winder.
I have drawers of used pickups and a yes actually have a pickup winder.
The main goal was to simply try to voice this one to sound a little thicker with the singles. I know it's not the beat all end all and is perfect but as long as I can crank up the amp it does OK. Adding in a little low mids to the tone was the easy part the trick was to try and keep as much clarity and twang as possible without the fuzz or grit harsh overtones that we sometimes get with an OD voiced on the bright side. That's where the choosing of the right parts came in IMO.
BTW. Sure if you want to post any RF stuff would be wonderful. The stuff Robben did with the jackets is great stuff. Thanks for asking.

it's always good to keep reminding ourselves of this regardless of what instrument you play

@Tony, yes I find if I spend a while with one guitar I start to dial the sound in, then if I switch to a different topology it all goes out of the window. Perhaps that's why I like P90's they sit in the middle.
I'll get the Yellow jackets up now. Robben's Dumble is screaming!!!

Tony,
In the clip you posted, does the dry signal flow serial through the Lexicon LXP-15 or are you you running the dry and wet in parallel (dry not through LXP)? If it is serial can you recommend a good smaller lexicon reverb for gigging with a serial loop? My preference would be something that is not 13 inches deep but handles dry signal well.
I bought Robben Fords 2290 when it went up for sale and now I am spoiled with regard to the way it handles the dry signal in my 102 => Vox V941 dlator mod (thx to you!) => 2290
I'd like to add reverb to one of the 2290 external loops and those are serial.
BTW, absolutely great tone and playing!! I admire how you chase that at the individual component level.
Thanks!

You can pick up 19 inch rack gear now really cheaply, no ones using racks anymore. I have a 2290 sat here next my Lexicon A300 and I can't remember the last time I even switched them on! I got offered a whole bunch of 19 inch rack reverbs /delays etc recently from a company that does live sound as everything is now digital and outboard 19 racks are becoming a thing of the past as it's now all in the box/desk.
the Yamaha Rev series are great, TC 3000/6000 are superb, the cheaper Lexicons too all have decent analogue sides, that's the one thing they did have back in the day, good analogue paths.

Good to hear from you!
I am the worst guy to ask this!.As far as the rack stuff I am a luddite. The setup I used in the video was a parallel with the mix control mixing at the inputs and outputs on the loop. The LXP-15 has a transparent mix control and for years used it in a serial configuration with no complaints and when I first started using it on my JTM and old Tweeds through the front end of the amp. I love the thing and have gotten so used to it I have not yet found one to replace it for a decent price. Others I have tried have been PCM 60 and MXP 100 and some of the older Yamaha's a few Alesis's and the newer TC (G-major's)but didn't really like them enough to recommend the analogue/Mix sections in any of those for a serial configuration.
. As far as a smaller parallel unit that is not 13" the only one that comes to mind is the Rocktron Intellaflex's I know quite a few friend players that have used these with their Dumbles and recommend them. I've used a MXP-100 at times in my parallel loop and it does OK and has like 1 good sound I use (Ambience) but is not one I would really recommend. You might like it you might not. Sorry this is not much help and perhaps others can chime in and recommend something else.
BTW. I would love to get a 2290. I just cannot see spending 1,200.00 for rack reverb unit. I have played through a few and they are nice units and if I were to find one at a good price I would replace the LXP it would be with a 2290
