anyone recognise this wreck build?

Post by doctord02 »

another who dunnit: anyone here build this wreck amp?

http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showth ... p?t=332830

Is that an oil filled motor run/start capacitor? It's just a very clean and unique take on the wreck idea. Looks like a Marshall PT and a Shoemacher 4k OT plus that soupcan of a filter. I'm guessing the voltages are a bit high, but might still be a cool amp...

edit- adding the pics incase the post dissapears...

Most oil-filled caps I've seen have an oval cross-section, like this:

The cap on the amp looks like a really large multi-section cap, to me.

That's absolutely false. I have no idea who built that and it's not my style either.

Please provide a link to the post that claims I built this and I will rectify it. If you made a mistake, please edit your post and remove my name.

Yes, the blue one that's currently on ebay was built by me. I posted about its history on TGP.

That looks a lot like Paul Ruby's style, but not sure if it's his.

It's definitely an oil filled motor run cap, I found them on Ebay and just ordered a couple...

http://cgi.ebay.com/80-mfd-500-VAC-Capa ... p1638.m118

So somebody, Paul, whomever... What are the advantages of these motor run caps? I've seen them mentioned from time to time but dont have an audio perspective on them...

My guess is because they are non-polar so can tolerate huge voltage swings (inductive kick) in either direction from the motor.

But do they offer any advantage to an audio circuit? Seems I've heard of them getting used in some high-end tube amps... Maybe it was over at Amperage or DIY Audio... Something like super low ESR and/or fast transient peak response under a heavy demand... You know, Audiophoolery...

:-)

I may try them in my uber bass amp I keep threatening to build.
